#138. When God Confronts Complacency: Amos' Call to Justice, Compassion & True Worship | Amos 1–9

What if God's greatest act of love is refusing to let His children remain comfortable in their sin?

In today's episode of The Dwelling Place, Stephanie Hickox walks through the powerful book of Amos, where God raises up an unlikely prophet—a humble shepherd and fig tree farmer—to confront Israel's spiritual complacency, religious hypocrisy, and lack of compassion for the poor.

Although Israel was enjoying wealth and prosperity under King Jeroboam II, their hearts had wandered far from the Lord. Through Amos, God reveals that genuine worship is never separated from justice, mercy, and love for others. His repeated discipline wasn't meant to destroy His people—it was meant to restore them.

If you've ever wondered why God allows hardship, how to teach your children to treasure Christ above earthly comforts, or what true biblical justice looks like, this episode will encourage you to trust God's loving discipline and His promise to restore what seems beyond repair.

In This Episode You'll Discover

  • Why prosperity can become one of the greatest spiritual dangers.
  • What the Book of Amos teaches about God's justice and compassion.
  • Why God disciplines those He loves.
  • The connection between authentic worship and caring for the poor.
  • The meaning behind Amos' visions, including the plumb line and basket of summer fruit.
  • How Amos points forward to Jesus and God's plan to redeem people from every nation.
  • Encouragement for moms walking through disappointment, suffering, or unmet expectations.

Key Bible Passages

  • Amos 1–9
  • Amos 2:6–16
  • Amos 4:6–13
  • Amos 5:4–24
  • Amos 7:14–17
  • Amos 8:11–12
  • Amos 9:11–15
  • Acts 15:15–18

What You'll Learn

  • Why God judges injustice while extending mercy to those who repent.
  • How religious activity without a surrendered heart grieves the Lord.
  • Why God repeatedly says, "Yet you did not return to Me."
  • What it means to "Seek the Lord and live."
  • How trials often expose our idols and deepen our dependence on Christ.
  • Why biblical parenting includes both compassion and loving correction.
  • How God's promise to restore David's kingdom ultimately points to Jesus Christ and the Gospel.

A Word for Moms

Amos reminds us that God isn't interested in outward appearances alone. He desires hearts that love Him and overflow with compassion for others.

Sometimes God lovingly removes the very things we've depended on so we'll discover that Christ alone is enough. Whether you're grieving unmet expectations, navigating difficult parenting seasons, or wondering why God has allowed hardship, this book reminds us that His discipline is always rooted in His covenant love.

As you disciple your children, may you help them learn that lasting joy is never found in God's gifts apart from the Giver Himself.

:

I'm Stephanie Hickox.

3

:

Today, we're reading how the Lord

used a humble shepherd and fig

4

:

tree farmer to speak God's words

of the impending judgment These

5

:

nine chapters of Amos confront

complacency and a lack of compassion.

6

:

His name means burden bearer, and although

he was born in Judah, god sent him to

7

:

confront Israel during the reign of

Jeroboam II the king that the prophets

8

:

largely considered Israel's worst The

nation of Israel was experiencing

9

:

financial prosperity under his reign,

but their hearts were far from the Lord.

10

:

There was an absence of true

worship and a lack of justice.

11

:

Although the law had allowed Israel to

use servants to help them break free from

12

:

financial debt, what Israel was doing at

this time more resembles chattel slavery.

13

:

God rebuked this evil and the way

they took advantage of others.

14

:

Some of these verses were

15

:

Speaker 9: also

16

:

Steph: heavily relied upon

by abolitionists working to

17

:

defeat slavery in history.

18

:

the book of Amos often

uses courtroom terminology.

19

:

God is the judge, and he's calling the

nations to account for their evil deeds.

20

:

Amos compiles his sermons, poems,

and visions, and it begins with a

21

:

timestamp you're already familiar

with: Uzziah's earthquake.

22

:

It was such a monumental event that

it was used as a timestamp in history

23

:

In chapters one and two, Amos

shows the words of the Lord

24

:

that rebuke nation after nation.

25

:

First Damascus, then Gaza, then

Tyre, then Edom, then the Ammonites,

26

:

then Moab, and next Judah.

27

:

Lest they think they were safe from God's

judgment, Amos tells them, " Thus says

28

:

the Lord, ' For three transgressions

of Judah and for four, I will not

29

:

revoke the punishment, because they

have rejected the law of the Lord

30

:

and have not kept His statutes,

31

:

but their lies have led them astray,

those after which their fathers walked.

32

:

So I will send a fire upon Judah, and it

shall devour the strongholds of Jerusalem.

33

:

If you follow these rebukes

geographically, they form an exact

34

:

target around the nation of Israel

35

:

and Israel is a recipient of

the longest rebuke in the book

36

:

Thus says the Lord, for three

transgressions of Israel, and for four,

37

:

I will not revoke the punishment, because

they sell the righteous for silver,

38

:

and the needy for a pair of sandals.

39

:

Those who trample the head of the

poor into the dust of the earth, and

40

:

turn aside the way of the afflicted.

41

:

A man and his father shall go

into the same girl, so that

42

:

my holy name is profaned.

43

:

They shall lay themselves down beside

every altar on garments taken on pledge,

44

:

and in the house of their god they drink

the wine of those who have been fined.

45

:

Yet it was I who destroyed the

Amorite before them, whose height

46

:

was like the height of the cedars

and who was as strong as the oaks.

47

:

I destroyed his fruit above

and his roots beneath.

48

:

And it was I who brought you up out

of the land of Egypt and led you

49

:

forty years in the wilderness to

possess the land of the Ammonite.

50

:

And I raised up some of your

sons for prophets and some of

51

:

your young men for Nazirites.

52

:

Is it not indeed so, O people of Israel?

53

:

declares the Lord.

54

:

But you made the Nazirites drink

wine and commanded the prophets,

55

:

saying, 'You shall not prophesy.'

56

:

Behold, I will press you

down in your place as a cart

57

:

full of sheaves presses down.

58

:

Flight shall perish from the swift, and

the strong shall not retain his strength,

59

:

nor shall the mighty save his life.

60

:

He who handles the bow shall not

stand, and he who is swift of foot

61

:

shall not save himself, nor shall he

who rides the horse save his life.

62

:

And he who is stout of heart among

the mighty shall flee away naked

63

:

in that day, declares the Lord.

64

:

Hear this word that the Lord has

spoken against you, O people of

65

:

Israel, against the whole family that

I brought up out of the land of Egypt.

66

:

You only have I known of all

the families of the earth.

67

:

Therefore, I will punish

you for all your iniquities.

68

:

as God reminds them of

69

:

this history lesson, He's

saying, "I was mighty for you.

70

:

I rescued you and saved you.

71

:

And you who think you're mighty now

without Me will not be able to stand You

72

:

have been my people, and that's why I

will hold you accountable for your sin.

73

:

This is more evidence that a father

disciplines those he loves, and God is

74

:

willing to bring earthly consequences

to spare us eternally Picking

75

:

up in 3:12, " Thus says the Lord

76

:

As the shepherd rescues from the mouth

of the lion two legs or a piece of an

77

:

ear so shall the people of Israel who

dwell in Samaria be rescued with the

78

:

corner of a couch and part of a bed

79

:

Hear and testify against the house

of Jacob, declares the Lord God,

80

:

the God of hosts, that on the day I

punish Israel for his transgressions,

81

:

I will punish the altars of Bethel,

and the horns of the altar shall

82

:

be cut off and fall to the ground

83

:

The people had chosen to

worship golden calves and pagan

84

:

gods at the temple in Bethel.

85

:

And of their high places, the Lord says,

"I'm bringing an end to all of it."

86

:

But he will rescue them as a

shepherd rescues his flock.

87

:

We continue in chapter four Hear this

word, you cows of Bashan, who are on

88

:

the mountain of Samaria, who oppress the

poor, who crush the needy Who say to your

89

:

husbands, "Bring, that we may drink."

90

:

The Lord has sworn in His holiness that

behold, the days are coming upon you

91

:

when they shall take you away with hooks,

even the last of you with fish hooks

92

:

God tells them judgment is

coming for their injustice

93

:

Come to Bethel to Gilgal

and multiply transgression.

94

:

Bring your sacrifices every morning,

your tithes every three days.

95

:

Offer a sacrifice of thanksgiving of

that which is leavened, and proclaim

96

:

freewill offerings, publish them.

97

:

For so you love to do, O people

of Israel," declares the Lord God

98

:

God is calling them out for their

wicked sacrifices to these false gods

99

:

And next we see the efforts of the

Lord to bring them to the end of

100

:

themselves I gave you cleanness of

teeth in all your cities, and lack of

101

:

bread in all your places; yet you did

not return to Me," declares the Lord.

102

:

" I also withheld the rain

from you when there were yet

103

:

three months to the harvest.

104

:

I would send rain on one city,

and send no rain on another

105

:

city; one field would have rain,

106

:

and the field on which it

did not rain would wither.

107

:

So two or three cities would wander

to another city to drink water, and

108

:

would not be satisfied; yet you did

not return to Me," declares the Lord.

109

:

" I struck you with blight and

mildew; your many gardens and your

110

:

vineyards, your fig trees and your

olive trees the locust devoured.

111

:

Yet you did not return to

Me," declares the Lord.

112

:

" I sent among you a pestilence after the

manner of Egypt; I killed your young

113

:

men with the sword and carried away your

horses, and I made the stench of your

114

:

camp go up into your nostrils; yet you

did not return to Me," declares the Lord.

115

:

" I overthrew some of you as when

God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah,

116

:

and you were as a brand plucked

out of the burning; yet you did not

117

:

return to Me," declares the Lord.

118

:

" Therefore thus will I do to you, O

Israel; because I will do this to you,

119

:

prepare to meet your God, O Israel."

120

:

For behold, he who forms the mountains

and creates the wind, and declares

121

:

to man what is his thought, who

makes the morning darkness, and

122

:

treads on the heights of the earth.

123

:

The Lord, the God of Hosts is His

name God has disciplined them over and

124

:

over for their abominations, yet they

have continued in their wickedness.

125

:

He is righteously jealous for His people.

126

:

He knows He is the best thing for

them, and He will not relent until

127

:

this chosen nation returns to Him

This faithfulness of God to teach

128

:

His children, " You will have no joy

apart from Me," is such a model for us

129

:

As we parent and point our kids to

the lasting joy of the Lord While

130

:

they're learning about the pleasures

this world has to offer, it's our job

131

:

as parents to say, " We can enjoy the

gifts of the Lord, but never think

132

:

you'll be satisfied apart from the giver

133

:

At times, we may see God taking

away things they love dearly, and

134

:

we can rejoice for God's faithful

jealousy in their lives as well.

135

:

Perhaps you recognize that pattern

in your own life, whether it's been

136

:

the loss or the grieving of something

you held dear that made you realize

137

:

the sufficiency of your Savior

138

:

The God of scripture does not

punish for punishment's sake.

139

:

He is a teacher and a restorer

And we see this in chapter five.

140

:

For thus says the Lord to the house

of Israel, " Seek me and live.

141

:

But do not seek Bethel, and do not enter

into Gilgal or cross over to Beersheba.

142

:

For Gilgal shall surely go into exile,

and Bethel shall come to nothing."

143

:

Seek the Lord and live Next, God

continues to rebuke their injustices.

144

:

They hate him who reproves in the gate,

and they abhor him who speaks the truth.

145

:

Therefore, because you trample on the

poor and you exact taxes of grain from

146

:

him, you have built houses of hewn

stone, but you shall not dwell in them.

147

:

You have planted pleasant vineyards,

but you shall not drink their wine.

148

:

For I know how many are

your transgressions and

149

:

how great are your sins.

150

:

You who afflict the righteous

who take a bribe and turn

151

:

aside the needy in the gate.

152

:

Therefore, he who is prudent

will keep silent in such a

153

:

time, for it is an evil time.

154

:

Seek good and not evil, that you may live.

155

:

And so the Lord, the God of hosts,

will be with you as you have said.

156

:

Hate evil and love good, and

establish justice in the gate.

157

:

It may be that the Lord, the God of hosts,

will be gracious to the remnant of Joseph.

158

:

And many in the nation were

hopeful for the day of the Lord to

159

:

bring judgment upon the nations.

160

:

But God strongly rebukes them, saying

in essence, "You want my justice?

161

:

Be careful."

162

:

Woe to you who desire the day of the Lord.

163

:

Why would you have the day of the Lord?

164

:

It is darkness and not light.

165

:

As if a man fled from a lion and

a bear met him, or went into the

166

:

house and leaned his hands against

the wall and a serpent bit him.

167

:

Is not the day of the Lord

darkness and not light, and

168

:

gloom with no brightness in it?

169

:

I despise your feasts, and I take no

delight in your solemn assemblies.

170

:

Even though you offer me your

burnt offerings and grain

171

:

offerings, I will not accept them.

172

:

And the peace offerings of your fattened

animals, I will not look upon them.

173

:

Take away from me the noise of your songs.

174

:

To the melody of your harps I will

not listen, But let justice roll

175

:

down like waters and righteousness

like an ever-flowing stream.

176

:

Do you hear these repeated calls

that our faith in God should

177

:

result in compassion toward others?

178

:

God is saying, "Don't pretend

to honor me when you don't honor

179

:

your fellow image-bearers."

180

:

But you have turned justice into

poison and the fruit of righteousness

181

:

into wormwood So God tells them

For behold, I will raise up against

182

:

you a nation, a house of Israel,

declares the Lord, the God of hosts.

183

:

And they shall oppress you

184

:

Next we come to chapter seven,

where Amos begins sharing different

185

:

visions the Lord gave him.

186

:

Initially, he envisions God sending

locusts upon the nation, and he

187

:

asks God to stop his judgment.

188

:

And the Lord relented concerning this.

189

:

"It shall not be," said the Lord.

190

:

Next, Amos sees judgment by fire.

191

:

Once again, Amos asks the

Lord to change his mind.

192

:

And the Lord relented concerning this.

193

:

" This also shall not

be," said the Lord God.

194

:

Next, God shows Amos a

construction tool of a plumb line.

195

:

A plumb line indicates whether

or not the building is level.

196

:

And we know throughout the Bible that

if you're not building on the foundation

197

:

of the Lord, it's sure to be crooked.

198

:

God warns that these temples to

false gods will be laid waste

199

:

inserted here the wicked priest Amaziah

goes to King Jeroboam II and tells him

200

:

what Amos is saying against the nation.

201

:

Instead of repenting, this prophet and

king rebuke Amos and order him to flee.

202

:

But Amos is confident in

his mission from the Lord.

203

:

He responds, " I was no prophet nor

a prophet's son, but I was a herdsman

204

:

and a dresser of sycamore figs.

205

:

But the Lord took me from following

the flock, and the Lord said to me,

206

:

' Go prophesy to my people Israel.'"

207

:

And therefore hear the word of the Lord

you say, do not prophesy against me?

208

:

And do not preach against

the house of Isaac.

209

:

Therefore thus says the Lord, " Your

wife shall be a prostitute in the

210

:

city, and your sons and daughters shall

fall by the sword, and your land shall

211

:

be divided up with a measuring line.

212

:

You yourself shall die in an unclean

land, and Israel shall surely go

213

:

into exile, away from its land."

214

:

Next, God reveals to Amos

a basket of summer fruit.

215

:

And in Hebrew, there's a play on words

that we can't quite catch in English

216

:

The Hebrew word for summer fruit and the

word for the end are quite similar So when

217

:

the Lord says, " Amos, what do you see?"

218

:

And he said, "A basket of summer

fruit," then the Lord replies, " The

219

:

end has come upon my people, Israel.

220

:

I will never again pass by them."

221

:

And to these people that do not want to

hear the words of the Lord, God tells them

222

:

in Amos 11 and 12, " Behold, the days

are coming," declares the Lord God, " when

223

:

I will send a famine on the land, not a

famine of bread, nor a thirst for water,

224

:

but of hearing the words of the Lord.

225

:

They shall wander from sea to

sea and from north to east.

226

:

They shall run to and fro to seek the word

of the Lord, but they shall not find it."

227

:

This refers to the 400 years

of silence between the Old

228

:

Testament and the New Testament.

229

:

These people don't want to listen

to God's words, and eventually

230

:

He will issue His silence.

231

:

But after this purification

of the nation, there is hope.

232

:

The book concludes,

233

:

In that day I will rise up the booth

of David that has fallen and repair

234

:

its breaches and raise up its ruins and

rebuild it as in the days of old that

235

:

they may possess the remnant of Eden,

and all the nations who are called by

236

:

my name declares the Lord who does this.

237

:

And in the Jerusalem Council, in

Acts 15, James quoted this very verse

238

:

To confirm that our God

is for every nation.

239

:

next God describes a restored

Jerusalem Where the cities

240

:

are rebuilt and inhabited, the

vineyards are planted and enjoyed.

241

:

And God says, "I will plant them

on their land, and they shall

242

:

never again be uprooted out of

the land that I have given them."

243

:

Though all of his disciplines to

date have not produced fruit in

244

:

their hearts, there will come a point

where the nation will be purified.

245

:

Their religious hypocrisy will

cease, and their love for God

246

:

will produce a love for others.

247

:

Forty years after Amos proclaimed

these words, the nation of Assyria

248

:

entered and took them into captivity

249

:

but it's not the end of the story.

250

:

Our God is a God that

makes beauty from ashes.

251

:

And maybe you're looking

at ruins in your own life.

252

:

Are there hopes and visions you had for

yourself or your family you're evaluating

253

:

circumstances and you only see ruins.

254

:

It's not turned out how you've expected.

255

:

Your family's health is struggling.

256

:

Your finances are dwindling.

257

:

Your relationships are far from thriving.

258

:

The things you wanted to do for the Lord

haven't come to pass And when you look in

259

:

the mirror you don't see what you used to

But maybe in all of this, our hearts can

260

:

be purified, and we can be thankful for

all of the circumstances that confront our

261

:

complacency and help us be compassionate

toward others that are struggling.

262

:

Let's pray now that the trials of this

earth would produce a purity in our hearts

263

:

that sets Christ alone on the throne

264

:

Heavenly Father, as we read about

your righteous judgment upon

265

:

the nations, we are well aware

of the injustice we see today.

266

:

We plead for revival and a return to you,

not just in our own hearts and in our

267

:

families But in the countries we live,

268

:

We don't just ask for a moral return,

but rather pure-hearted worship

269

:

that produces a love for others.

270

:

We know without your hand of redemption,

271

:

We are hopeless to produce this.

272

:

And Lord, it's a hard thing to praise

you for, but we're grateful for the

273

:

times that you have put an end to

our dreams and our hopes so we could

274

:

realize we have no delight apart

from you We pray for patience as

275

:

we watch trials come upon our kids.

276

:

Help us to be mothers that meet

our kids with compassion, but also

277

:

faithfully point them to pursue you.

278

:

When doors close in their lives, give

us eyes to see what you might be doing.

279

:

In the midst of it all, we thank

you, God, that we have your word to

280

:

continually guide us to your heart.

281

:

We thank you, Jesus, for the model

that true love of God produces love

282

:

for others And we long for this

reality in our hearts and in our homes.

283

:

It's in your name we pray.

284

:

Amen
