if you are a mom, longing to focus on what matters for eternity,

2

:

but feeling overwhelmed by the duties

of motherhood, this is for you.

3

:

It isn't to make the Bible about us,

it's to make our homes about him.

4

:

This is the dwelling place

from Entrusted Ministries.

5

:

I'm Stephanie Hickox, and today

we'll dig into Deuteronomy

6

:

chapters five through seven.

7

:

In chapter five, Moses

repeats the 10 Commandments.

8

:

This is a good thing to have memorized

where it is in your Bible they were

9

:

first introduced in Exodus 20, and

now they're also in Deuteronomy five.

10

:

I'll link our Exodus 20 episode in case

you wanna go back and hear those again,

11

:

One of the verses that displays

the heart of God so powerfully.

12

:

Is in 5 29 when his people are obeying,

God says, oh, that they had such a heart

13

:

as this always to fear me and keep my

commandments, that it may go well with

14

:

them and with their descendants forever.

15

:

There's an exclamation point You

can hear the longing in God's heart.

16

:

Although he is a God worthy

of all glory and praise, his

17

:

intent is to bless us as well.

18

:

It's when we have a proper perspective

of him and we act in accordance with

19

:

that perspective that we are blessed,

20

:

but it starts with the heart.

21

:

And if we want this for our kids,

we've gotta do what Chapter six

22

:

tells us to teach them diligently.

23

:

Now.

24

:

This is the commandment, the statutes,

and the rules that the Lord your

25

:

God commanded me to teach you.

26

:

That you may do them in the land to

which you are going over to possess it.

27

:

That you may fear the Lord your

God, you and your son and your son's

28

:

son, by keeping all his statutes and

his commandments, which I command

29

:

you all the days of your life, and

that your days may be long here.

30

:

Therefore, owe Israel and be careful to

do them, that it may go well with you and

31

:

that you may multiply greatly as the Lord,

the God of your fathers has promised you.

32

:

In a land flowing with milk and honey

here, O Israel, the Lord our God.

33

:

The Lord is one.

34

:

You shall love the Lord your God

with all your heart and with all

35

:

your soul, and with all your might.

36

:

And these words that I command

you today shall be on your heart.

37

:

You shall teach them diligently to

your children and shall talk of them

38

:

when you sit in your house, when you

walk by the way, and when you lie down.

39

:

And when you rise, you shall bind them

as a sign on your hand, and they shall

40

:

be as frontlets between your eyes.

41

:

You shall write them on the doorposts

of your house and on your gates, and

42

:

when the Lord, your God brings you into

the land that he swore to your fathers.

43

:

To Abraham, to Isaac and to Jacob to give

you with great and good cities that you

44

:

did not build and houses full of all good

things that you did not fill and cisterns,

45

:

that you did not dig, and vineyards

and olive trees that you did not plant.

46

:

And when you eat and are full, then

take care, lest you forget the Lord who

47

:

brought you out of the land of Egypt.

48

:

Out of the house of slavery,

it is the Lord your God.

49

:

You shall fear him, you shall serve,

and by his name you shall swear.

50

:

You shall not go after other gods.

51

:

The gods of the peoples

who are around you.

52

:

For the Lord your God, in

your midst is a jealous God.

53

:

When your son asks you in time to come,

what is the meaning of the testimonies

54

:

and the statutes and the rules that

the Lord our God has commanded you?

55

:

Then you shall say to your son,

we were Pharaoh slaves in Egypt,

56

:

and the Lord brought us out

of Egypt with a mighty hand.

57

:

And the Lord showed signs and

wonders, great and grievous against

58

:

Egypt and against Pharaoh and all

his household before our eyes.

59

:

And he brought us out from there that he

might bring us in and give us the land

60

:

that he swore to give to our fathers.

61

:

And the Lord commanded us

to do all these statutes.

62

:

Steph: To fear the Lord our God for our

good, always that he might preserve us

63

:

alive as we are to this day, and it will

be righteousness for us if we are careful

64

:

to do all this commandment before the

Lord our God as he has commanded us.

65

:

Speaker 8: when you sit in your house.

66

:

Think about that.

67

:

When do you sit?

68

:

Probably most commonly at mealtime.

69

:

Do you process your days together,

training your kids to see God's

70

:

perspective, and then when you

walk, by the way, I love taking

71

:

walks with my kids for this purpose.

72

:

They're so willing to tell me all

the things that are on their hearts

73

:

and that are important to them, and

often by the time we make a lap,

74

:

we'll have gone through something

deep that they needed to work through.

75

:

The same is true when we're

driving in the car next.

76

:

When you lie down those bedtime

stories or prayers that you

77

:

do, that's you living this out.

78

:

Showing them your nearness

and thanking the Lord.

79

:

And when you rise, this

verse covers all that we do.

80

:

These moments add up

and they're important.

81

:

Speaker 8: God isn't supposed

to be left in the church walls.

82

:

Our conversations about him should

be following us wherever we go,

83

:

and we're to train our children how to

apply his word to life in the heart,

84

:

and the confusing and the joyful,

and in the seasons of abundance.

85

:

In all of it, we're pointing

our kids to God's commandments

86

:

that it may go well with them.

87

:

Chapter six, four through

nine are known as the Shema.

88

:

That phrase is repeated by devout

Jews still twice a day, every day.

89

:

That's how important this

scripture is to them here.

90

:

Oh, Israel the Lord.

91

:

The Lord our God.

92

:

The Lord is one.

93

:

This reminds us, there is only one God.

94

:

The Israelites had come out of a culture

with many gods, and they were surrounded

95

:

by pagan nations that worshiped many.

96

:

But the mighty God of the Bible is one.

97

:

This doesn't negate the trinity because

the same word for one is used in Genesis

98

:

2 24 when Adam and Eve became one flesh.

99

:

Rather, it refers to the unity of

God in the New Testament in one

100

:

Corinthians eight, six, Paul echoes

this sentiment when he says, yet

101

:

for us there is one God the Father.

102

:

From whom are all things and from

whom we exist, and one Lord Jesus

103

:

Christ, through whom are all

things and through whom we exist.

104

:

Steph: In seven six, we read for you are

a people wholly to the Lord your God.

105

:

The Lord your God has chosen you

to be a people for his treasured

106

:

possession out of all the peoples

who were on the face of the earth.

107

:

It was not because you were more in

number than any other people, that the

108

:

Lord set his love on you and chose you

for you were the fewest of all peoples.

109

:

Speaker 7: But it is because the Lord

loves you and is keeping the oath that he

110

:

swore to your fathers, that the Lord has

brought you out with a mighty hand and

111

:

redeemed you from the house of slavery,

from the hand of Pharaoh, king of Egypt.

112

:

And in verse 21, you shall

not be in dread of them.

113

:

For the Lord, your God is in your midst.

114

:

A great and awesome God.

115

:

The Lord your God will clear

away these nations before you.

116

:

Little by little.

117

:

You may not make an end

of them all at once.

118

:

Lest the wild beast grow

too numerous for you.

119

:

God has a wise expansion

plan for the Israelites.

120

:

If all of the promised land.

121

:

It was abandoned at once and

all of it conquered at once.

122

:

They really wouldn't be

able to settle it wisely.

123

:

as chapter seven discusses getting

rid of some of these people groups, I

124

:

wanted to talk about the ethical issues

raised in wiping out a people group

125

:

and why this is still in line with God's

goodness and righteousness and his love.

126

:

I am gonna follow James Coley's

line of reasoning here, first.

127

:

We are all sinners and we deserve death.

128

:

And we need to understand that first

because when most of the world is

129

:

given grace to carry on, we need to

see that as God's mercy, the nations

130

:

that are doing wicked, wicked things.

131

:

Being wiped out that is perfectly

in line with God's justice and

132

:

what they deserved for their sin.

133

:

God had been patient for hundreds

of years with these people and

134

:

they continued in their wickedness.

135

:

He delayed their punishment.

136

:

And anyone that would've repented

and come to Israel was welcome.

137

:

So they're not being eliminated

138

:

because of their ethnicity.

139

:

They're being eliminated

because of their evil practices.

140

:

God and His mercy prevents the

sin from spreading to others.

141

:

He called his people to have peace

with the nations outside their

142

:

borders, but within, they were told

to eliminate the pagan nations.

143

:

It served as a preventative measure.

144

:

And let's just be reminded these

people were engaging in child sacrifice

145

:

and wickedness upon wickedness

that they believed their

146

:

gods were requiring of them.

147

:

Also Coakley writes that the context

tells us that these people hated God.

148

:

It wasn't just that they weren't

aware of him, they were antagonistic

149

:

to the covenant God of Israel,

150

:

I understand why it can be off-putting.

151

:

When we read that they were to

destroy every life in the nation.

152

:

But I've always been taught to believe

in the age of accountability that even

153

:

though we are all born with the sin

nature, the Lord does not hold our sin

154

:

against us if we die under a certain age.

155

:

And I believe it is his kindness

that would allow a child from one

156

:

of these wicked nations to perish

that he might offer them eternal

157

:

grace before they had a chance.

158

:

To repeat the evil they

had seen their parents do.

159

:

This is something that scholars debate

about, but Betsy spoke more in depth

160

:

about the age of accountability on

the again podcast, and I'll link that

161

:

episode in case you'd like to hear more.

162

:

It's just something that comforts me.

163

:

When I read some of those verses

that kind of prick at my heart,

164

:

let's pray.

165

:

Heavenly Father.

166

:

We thank you that you set your

heart on us while we were still

167

:

sinners, while we were rebellious.

168

:

You sought us and we are so grateful.

169

:

The promises in these chapters

abound of the blessings you

170

:

long to give your people.

171

:

and we pray for those blessings, Lord.

172

:

But we also pray you would protect our

hearts when we are in times of abundance.

173

:

Help us to be careful.

174

:

, That we still rely on you and seek

you diligently, and that we point to

175

:

you as the giver of all good things.

176

:

And as Jesus promised, we know that

we will have troubles on this earth,

177

:

and so help us to not lose heart

178

:

May we also use those

times to train our children

179

:

to see how you are good just

as you are available to us, may

180

:

we be available to our kids.

181

:

Help us to not be distracted.

182

:

By the notifications of our phones

and the constant tasks we need to

183

:

accomplish, but make us available

for the conversations that matter

184

:

thank you Lord Jesus that you go with us.

185

:

It's in your name we pray.

186

:

Amen.
