#23. Exodus 4-6 | I Will Be With You and Teach You What To Do

The Burning Bush exchange between God and Moses is infamous. Moses' reservations to following the Lord can certainly resonate with us today. Listen to hear just how many times Moses attempts to tell God, "No!" and hear how God responds to him.

This is a dwelling place

from Entrusted Ministries.

2

:

I'm Stephanie Cock.

3

:

This Saturday morning I'll be emailing

February's Bible reading plan.

4

:

If you haven't signed up for our free

printable resources, I'll link that in

5

:

the show notes in today's reading, there

is an abundance of evidence that this is

6

:

a God who longs to dwell with his people

because this burning bush moment is so

7

:

pivotal for what's going to happen over

the next several books of the Bible,

8

:

i'm going to read a longer portion today,

but it's wholly worthy of our attention.

9

:

As you listen, pay attention to

how many objections Moses has and

10

:

which one most resonates with you as

you think about what your barriers

11

:

are to fully obeying the Lord.

12

:

We will begin in chapter three, verse 13.

13

:

Then Moses said to God, if I come to the

people of Israel and say to them, the

14

:

God of your fathers has sent me to you,

and they asked me, what is his name?

15

:

What shall I say to them?

16

:

God said to Moses, I am who I am.

17

:

And he said, say this to the people

of Israel I am has sent me to you.

18

:

God also said to Moses, say this

to the people of Israel, the Lord,

19

:

the God of your fathers, the God of

Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the

20

:

God of Jacob has sent me to you.

21

:

This is my name forever, and thus I am to

be remembered throughout all generations.

22

:

Go and gather the elders of Israel

together and say to them, the Lord, the

23

:

God of your fathers, the God of Abraham,

of Isaac, and of Jacob has appeared

24

:

to me saying, I have observed you and

what has been done to you in Egypt?

25

:

And I promise that I will bring you

up out of the affliction of Egypt

26

:

to the land of the Canaanites,

the Hittites, the Amorites, the

27

:

parasites, the HIEs and the Jebusites.

28

:

A land flowing with milk and honey.

29

:

And they will listen to your voice and

you and the elders of Israel shall go

30

:

to the King of Egypt and say to him.

31

:

The Lord, the God of the

Hebrews has met with us.

32

:

And now please let us go a three days

journey into the wilderness that we

33

:

may sacrifice to the Lord our God.

34

:

But I know that the King of

Egypt will not let you go unless

35

:

compelled by a mighty hand.

36

:

So I will stretch out my hand

and strike Egypt with all the

37

:

wonders that I will do in it.

38

:

After that, he will let you go.

39

:

And I will give this people favor

in the sight of the Egyptians.

40

:

And when you go, you shall not go empty.

41

:

But each woman shall ask of her

neighbor and any woman who lives in

42

:

her house for silver and gold jewelry

and for clothing, you shall put them

43

:

on your sons and on your daughters,

so you shall plunder the Egyptians.

44

:

And chapter four begins.

45

:

Then Moses answered, but behold,

they will not believe me or listen

46

:

to my voice for they will say,

the Lord did not appear to you.

47

:

The Lord said to him,

what is that in your hand?

48

:

He said, A staff.

49

:

And he said, throw it on the ground.

50

:

So he threw it on the ground and it

became a serpent, and Moses ran from it.

51

:

But the Lord said to Moses, put out

your hand and catch it by the tail.

52

:

So he put out his hand and caught

it, and it became a staff in his hand

53

:

that they may believe that the Lord,

the God of their fathers, the God of

54

:

Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God

of Jacob, has appeared to you again.

55

:

The Lord said to him, put

your hand inside your cloak.

56

:

And he put his hand inside his cloak

and when he took it out, behold

57

:

his hand was lepers like snow.

58

:

Then God said, put your

hand back inside your cloak.

59

:

So he put his hand back inside his cloak

and when he took it out, behold it was

60

:

restored like the rest of his flush.

61

:

If they will not believe you, God

said, or listen to the first sign.

62

:

They may believe the ladder sign.

63

:

If they will not believe even these

two signs or listen to your voice, you

64

:

shall take some water from the Nile

and pour it on the dry ground and the

65

:

water that you shall take from the Nile

will become blood on the dry ground.

66

:

But Moses said to the Lord, oh my Lord.

67

:

I am not eloquent either in the past or

since you have spoken to your servant.

68

:

but I am slow of speech and of tongue.

69

:

Then the Lord said to him,

who is made man's mouth?

70

:

Who makes him mute or

deaf or seeing or blind?

71

:

Is it not?

72

:

I the Lord.

73

:

Now therefore go and I will be with your

mouth and teach you what you shall speak.

74

:

But he said, oh my Lord,

please send someone else.

75

:

Then the anger of the Lord was kindled

against Moses and he said, is there

76

:

not Aaron, your brother, the Levite.

77

:

I know that he can speak well.

78

:

Behold, he's coming out to meet you

and when he sees you, he will be glad.

79

:

In his heart, you shall speak to him

and put the words in his mouth and I will

80

:

be with your mouth and with his mouth,

and will teach you both what to do.

81

:

How did you do?

82

:

Did you catch all five?

83

:

God was truly patient with

Moses in this exchange,

84

:

and we can all be grateful for that.

85

:

My MacArthur commentary summarizes

Moses's five Excuses this way.

86

:

First, Moses says, I am a nobody.

87

:

God says I will be with you.

88

:

Secondly, he objects, I'm not a

theologian, and God says I am.

89

:

Third.

90

:

Moses tells the Lord, I'm unconvincing,

and God says, I will make you convincing.

91

:

Fourth, I'm not a preacher.

92

:

God tells him I will be with your mouth

and will teach you what you shall speak.

93

:

And fifth Moses says, I'm really

not interested, and God tells

94

:

him, I'll send Aaron to help

you and teach you what to do.

95

:

I would argue that the fifth objection

is really Moses speaking out of fear.

96

:

We do wonder if perhaps Moses

had an issue with his speech.

97

:

I've heard many pastors insinuate

this through the years as he does make

98

:

an objection that he's not eloquent.

99

:

But as I was reading in the book of

Acts earlier this year, I came across

100

:

Stephen's speech in Acts seven.

101

:

We're told Stephen was full

of the Holy Spirit and this

102

:

is what he says about Moses.

103

:

And Moses was instructed in all

the wisdom of the Egyptians, and he

104

:

was mighty in his words and deeds.

105

:

This is referring to Moses

before the burning bush moment.

106

:

Let's remind ourselves that the

Bible is a progressive revelation.

107

:

It seems that Stephen's speech indicates

that Moses was more eloquent than he gave

108

:

himself credit for, but certainly he was

battling insecurity, and I can relate

109

:

next.

110

:

We must stop to meditate on three 14 when

God tells Moses, I am who I am, say to

111

:

the people of Israel, I am has sent me

to you in the original Hebrew language,

112

:

their alphabet did not have vowels.

113

:

This name I am would've

been represented by YHWH.

114

:

It's also known as the

Tetragrammaton, meaning four letters.

115

:

And as the command is given in

Leviticus to not take the Lord's name

116

:

in vain, the people became fearful

117

:

that they were going to take it

in vain, and they decided to not

118

:

even speak it out loud anymore.

119

:

Therefore, it's difficult for us

to know exactly what vowel sounds

120

:

would've filled those letters.

121

:

it became replaced with the Greek

word add an I meaning master or Lord.

122

:

And over time, they combined those

vowels with the Hebrew consonants,

123

:

YHWH, and this created the word Jehovah,

but the name Jehovah was possibly

124

:

formed as late as the 16th century.

125

:

If you've ever wondered why certain

people are insistent that God

126

:

be called Jehovah, that is why.

127

:

But what's most important about this?

128

:

Title I am.

129

:

It means he is self-sufficient.

130

:

He is not a created being.

131

:

He relies upon nothing to be sustained.

132

:

He always was, and he always will be.

133

:

He is unlike anything

else in the universe.

134

:

In these few letters, God

communicates fully that he is eternal.

135

:

Set apart and holy.

136

:

But it also reveals he has the

power to bring the Hebrews out

137

:

of bondage, and Moses is still

fearful about what God is calling.

138

:

Him to do in the process.

139

:

In chapter four, there's a really odd

moment where Moses is on his way back

140

:

to Egypt and it says The Lord met

him and sought to put him to death.

141

:

But Zipporah, his wife, circumcised

her son and saved Moses' life.

142

:

A few months ago, I had the

opportunity to sit under a brilliant

143

:

Bible professor from Moody.

144

:

I asked a question about spiritual

leadership and she used the

145

:

example of Zipporah to say that

Zipporah took spiritual authority

146

:

saving her husband's life.

147

:

She explained that submission doesn't

mean that you don't have agency.

148

:

God can use wives to convict challenge

and even sharpen their husbands.

149

:

While we don't have the complete story

behind this, apparently Moses was not like

150

:

Abraham who, when he was given the command

to circumcised, did it that very day.

151

:

Moses has a heart for justice,

but it appears that his obedience

152

:

is often reluctant and delayed.

153

:

Moses and Aaron do go to Pharaoh and just

as God foretold, they are not successful.

154

:

And this portion is exactly

what I needed today.

155

:

I'm convicted that I was falling

into a counterfeit line of thinking

156

:

that really isn't in scripture.

157

:

I've been thinking if I obey the Lord in

what he calls me to, then he's gonna be

158

:

like this holy steamroller going before

me, knocking down obstacles and providing

159

:

a smooth path for me to obey him.

160

:

But as I look at the past month of me

trying to honor the Lord in this project,

161

:

that's certainly not what's happened,

but I can say he's been with me and he's

162

:

making me more resilient in the obstacles.

163

:

In the next episode, we'll look

at the systematic dismantling of a

164

:

pantheon of Egyptian gods that the

one true God is going to defeat.

165

:

We'll even talk about how

much archeological evidence

166

:

there is for the Exodus.

167

:

And I will tell you, there's even

evidence in hieroglyphics that could

168

:

have pointed to this moment of Pharaoh

saying more bricks, less straw.

169

:

You know?

170

:

And I know that he's the God who

always was and who always will be.

171

:

How can we not choose to dwell with him?

172

:

Let's pray.

173

:

Heavenly Father, we thank you

that when we look to your word,

174

:

we see that you used fallen.

175

:

Insecure people to

accomplish your purposes.

176

:

Help us to lay all of our

vulnerabilities and weaknesses at

177

:

your feet because you tell us, Jesus,

that your grace is sufficient for us.

178

:

That when we are weak,

we can be strong in you.

179

:

And that your power and your might

is what goes with us to accomplish

180

:

your purposes on this earth.

181

:

As Moses and Aaron join each other to go

before Pharaoh, I pray once again over

182

:

the sibling relationships in our homes.

183

:

I pray our kids would be unified to

bring you glory and that this would

184

:

be their greatest aim and charge,

that they would be strengthened

185

:

to follow after you together.

186

:

And for those that do not have siblings.

187

:

I pray they would sense your presence

all the more in your gracious

188

:

but sufficient name we pray Jesus.

189

:

Amen.
