#149. The King Who Was Written Into History Before He Lived: One of Scripture's Most Astonishing Prophesies | Isaiah 41-48

Have you ever felt too worn down to keep going? Like one more hardship might break you?

In this episode of The Dwelling Place from Entrusted Ministries, Stephanie Hickox walks through Isaiah 42–48, where God reveals both His unmatched sovereignty and His incredible tenderness. These chapters are filled with some of Isaiah's most beloved promises—including "When you pass through the waters, I will be with you," "Fear not, for I have redeemed you," and the beautiful picture of Jesus as the Servant who will not break a bruised reed or quench a faintly burning wick.

Discover why Isaiah is often called the fifth Gospel as we see prophecy after prophecy pointing to Jesus Christ, God's plan to redeem the nations, and His faithfulness to accomplish every promise He has made.

Whether you're carrying heavy burdens, praying for a prodigal child, facing health challenges, or simply longing for renewed hope, this episode reminds us that the God who directs the hearts of kings is also the God who walks faithfully beside His children through every trial.

Encouragement for Christian Moms

It's easy to wonder whether God is really at work when life feels overwhelming. Isaiah reminds us that the Lord doesn't simply rescue us from every hardship—He promises to be with us in the middle of it.

When you walk through deep waters...

He is with you.

When the fire feels overwhelming...

He remains faithful.

When you feel like a bruised reed...

Jesus handles you with compassion, not condemnation.

When you're praying for your children and wondering if God can reach their hearts...

Remember that the God who named King Cyrus more than a century before his birth is fully able to accomplish His purposes in your family.

Nothing is impossible for Him.

This is the Dwelling Place

from Entrusted Ministries.

2

:

I'm Stephanie Hickox, and today

we have the delight of going

3

:

through Isaiah 42 through 48.

4

:

We're in the third section of Isaiah,

and so much of it points to Christ.

5

:

There's a reason Isaiah is

known as the fifth gospel.

6

:

Yesterday, God comforted his people

who were in exile in Babylon.

7

:

But wait, Isaiah lived and wrote around

700 BC, And the Southern Kingdom didn't

8

:

even fall to Babylon until 586 BC.

9

:

So how is Isaiah writing this?

10

:

Well, he certainly proved himself as a

worthy prophet in the previous chapters

11

:

And if you'd like to understand a

little bit more About the different

12

:

theories on how his prophecies came

to be I'm going to link a helpful

13

:

video from the Bible Project that

explains it a little bit more.

14

:

in chapter forty-two, we encounter

some verses that are directly

15

:

quoted of Jesus in Matthew twelve.

16

:

It occurs right after Jesus

heals a man on the Sabbath.

17

:

And the Pharisees conspire how to

destroy Jesus Jesus is aware of this.

18

:

He withdraws and many follow

him, and he healed them all, and

19

:

ordered them not to make him known.

20

:

This was to fulfill what was

spoken by the prophet Isaiah.

21

:

" Behold my servant, whom I have chosen; my

beloved with whom my soul is well pleased.

22

:

I will put my Spirit upon him, and he

will proclaim justice to the Gentiles.

23

:

He will not quarrel or cry aloud, nor

will anyone hear his voice in the streets;

24

:

a bruised reed he will not break, and

a smoldering wick he will not quench,

25

:

until he brings justice to victory; and

in his name the Gentiles will hope."

26

:

Jesus knew that healing the

people and proclaiming the truth

27

:

would ultimately end his life.

28

:

But he did it, and he didn't just

do it for Israel He did it for the

29

:

Gentiles and for you and I as well.

30

:

You may have had a little bit of an

issue learning yesterday that the angel

31

:

of the Lord killed one hundred and

eighty-five thousand Assyrians, and

32

:

it's quite likely that this was Jesus

33

:

before He took on human flesh.

34

:

You might wrestle a little bit in your

spirit to reconcile this Jesus who

35

:

came to restore and heal and save with

a Jesus who also brings judgment, but

36

:

He is certainly the same perfect God.

37

:

He is a Savior that lays down His life

so that we don't have to, but to all

38

:

who reject Him, He will judge, and

He will certainly protect His bride

39

:

There have been many times in my life

where I've meditated on that phrase,

40

:

" a bruised reed he will not break and a

faintly burning wick he will not quench.

41

:

There are times I felt so beaten

down by circumstances, and I

42

:

feel I just can't take anymore.

43

:

I've come to this verse and

said, "Lord, have mercy.

44

:

I'm pleading with you to protect

me from any more trials right now."

45

:

Sometimes, in His kindness,

I felt Him spare me,

46

:

yet often, I felt Him strengthen me to

handle more, and I can only rejoice in the

47

:

fact that He goes with me to bear it all

48

:

More of Christ's mission is

unveiled in verses six through nine.

49

:

As the Father says to

him, " I am the Lord.

50

:

I have called you in righteousness.

51

:

I will take you by the hand and keep you.

52

:

I will give you as a covenant for the

people, a light for the nations, to open

53

:

the eyes that are blind, to bring out

the prisoners from the dungeon, from

54

:

the prison those who sit in darkness.

55

:

I am the Lord, that is my name.

56

:

My glory I give to no other,

nor my praise to carved idols.

57

:

Behold, the former things have come to

pass, and the new things I now declare.

58

:

Before they spring forth,

I tell you of them."

59

:

Israel has chosen to not submit to

the Lord,, to the lordship of Yahweh.

60

:

So he's initiating a new covenant

61

:

but the people are thinking,

"How can you be a good God if

62

:

you let us go into captivity?"

63

:

Chapters 41 through 47 are like a trial

scene in which God is saying, " Not

64

:

only did I allow it, I sovereignly

ordained it, but I did it for your

65

:

good you'll probably recognize

these next verses from Isaiah 43

66

:

But now thus says the Lord, he who created

you, O Jacob, he who formed you, O Israel,

67

:

fear not, for I have redeemed you.

68

:

I have called you by name, you are mine.

69

:

When you pass through the waters,

I will be with you, and through the

70

:

rivers, they shall not overwhelm you.

71

:

When you walk through fire,

you shall not be burnt, and the

72

:

flame shall not consume you.

73

:

For I am the Lord your God, the

Holy One of Israel, your Savior.

74

:

I give Egypt as your ransom, Cush

and Seba in exchange for you.

75

:

Because you are precious in my

eyes and honored, and I love you,

76

:

I give men in exchange for you,

peoples in exchange for your life.

77

:

Fear not, for I am with you

78

:

And verse ten says, "You are my

witnesses," declares the Lord,

79

:

"and my servant whom I have chosen,

that you may know and believe

80

:

me and understand that I am he.

81

:

Before me no god was formed,

nor shall there be any after me.

82

:

I am the Lord, and besides

me there is no savior.

83

:

I declared and saved and proclaimed."

84

:

Before my third son was born, god put

a portion of this chapter on my heart

85

:

for his life verses I've talked about

it before, but when he was five, he went

86

:

through several lengthy hospital stays.

87

:

And I remember thinking, "Why in the

world did I choose these verses for him?

88

:

Clearly, they speak of trial."

89

:

But I watched as God strengthened

my little boy and his character.

90

:

I watched him be God's witness to every

nurse and doctor that came in the room,

91

:

a few years ago, Everett's siblings asked

him, "Do you wish it never happened?"

92

:

And he said, " No.

93

:

how could I wish away God's plans for me?

94

:

He has a good plan for my

life, and I trust Him."

95

:

I saw how the Lord strengthened him

through this, and through the years,

96

:

I've learned to understand why God

called me to select these verses for him

97

:

As he's endured more and more health

challenges, And I've realized not

98

:

to pray off this part of his story,

but to rejoice in God's nearness

99

:

and protection over his life.

100

:

But I don't mean to make it seem

that I think these verses are just

101

:

about us, because God's greater

purposes are certainly at work.

102

:

as verse eighteen says, " Remember

not the former things, nor

103

:

consider the things of old.

104

:

Behold, I am doing a new thing.

105

:

Now it springs forth.

106

:

Do you not perceive it?

107

:

I will make a way in the wilderness

and rivers in the desert.

108

:

The wild beasts will honor

Me, and jackals and ostriches.

109

:

For I give water in the wilderness,

rivers in the desert, to give

110

:

drink to My chosen people, the

people whom I formed for Myself,

111

:

that they might declare My praise."

112

:

We have the honor of being God's witnesses

and of bringing Him the praise He so

113

:

rightly deserves as He does this new

thing of rescuing us through Jesus Christ

114

:

But Israel still doesn't recognize it,

and in the next verses, God rebukes

115

:

them for not being faithful to Him.

116

:

And that's what makes God's response

in verse 25 all the more beautiful.

117

:

" I, I am He who blots out your

transgressions for my own sake,

118

:

and I will not remember your sins."

119

:

God continues to reveal his character

in forty-four six through eight.

120

:

Thus says the Lord, the King of Israel,

and his Redeemer, the Lord of hosts,

121

:

" I am the first, and I am the last.

122

:

Besides me, there is no God.

123

:

Who is like me?

124

:

Let him proclaim it.

125

:

Let him declare and set it before me

since I appointed an ancient people.

126

:

Let them declare what is to

come and what will happen.

127

:

Fear not, nor be afraid.

128

:

Have I not told you from

of old and declared it?

129

:

And you are my witnesses.

130

:

Is there a God besides me?

131

:

There is no rock, I know not any

132

:

As God rightfully elevates His perfect

character, there are also several

133

:

portions that rebuke the worship of idols.

134

:

One such section is in 44:14 through 20.

135

:

And as I read the absolute absurdity

of worshiping what we can make with

136

:

our hands, I hope it inspires you to

consider if there's anything in your

137

:

life that you pursue more than the

Lord would have you The carpenter

138

:

cuts down cedars, or he chooses a

cypress tree or an oak and lets it grow

139

:

strong among the trees of the forest.

140

:

He plants a cedar, and

the rain nourishes it.

141

:

Then it becomes fuel for a man.

142

:

He takes a part of it and warms himself;

he kindles a fire and bakes bread.

143

:

Also he makes a god and worships it; he

makes it an idol and falls down before it.

144

:

Half of it he burns in the fire;

over the half he eats meat; he

145

:

roasts it and is satisfied.

146

:

Also he warms himself and says, “Aha!

147

:

I am warm, I have seen the fire”; and

the rest of it he makes into a god, his

148

:

idol, and falls down and worships it.

149

:

He prays to it and says,

“Deliver me, for you are my god!”

150

:

They know not, nor do they discern,

for he has shut their eyes, so that

151

:

they cannot see, and their hearts,

so that they cannot understand.

152

:

No one considers, nor is there

knowledge or discernment to say,

153

:

“ Half of it I burned in the fire; I

also baked bread on its coals.

154

:

I roasted meat and have eaten.

155

:

And shall I make the rest

of it an abomination?

156

:

Shall I fall down before a block of wood?

157

:

He feeds on ashes.

158

:

A deluded heart has led him astray.

159

:

And he cannot deliver himself or say,

" Is there not a lie in my right hand?"

160

:

This satire is so convicting about the

foolishness of worshiping anything apart

161

:

from the Lord Chapter 44 concludes with

God declaring that Cyrus is his shepherd

162

:

and that he will fulfill God's purpose

and help rebuild the temple in Jerusalem.

163

:

Chapter 45 continues, " Thus says the

Lord to his anointed, to Cyrus, whose

164

:

right hand I have grasped to subdue

nations before him, and to loose the

165

:

belts of kings, to open doors before

him, that gates may not be closed.

166

:

I will go before you and

level the exalted places."

167

:

I'm gonna pull out a few other phrases

from God's declaration to Cyrus.

168

:

" You may not know that it is I, the Lord,

the God of Israel, who call you by name.

169

:

For the sake of my servant Jacob and

Israel, my chosen, I call you by name.

170

:

I name you, though you do not know me.

171

:

I equip you, though you do not know me."

172

:

King Cyrus, or Cyrus the Great, is

mentioned about 30 times in scripture.

173

:

He reigned over Persia between 539 and

530 BC, and this is what is so incredible.

174

:

These verses not only declare what God

used Cyrus to do, they say his very

175

:

name And Isaiah wrote these about 150

years before Cyrus walked the earth.

176

:

This king that did not submit to the

God of Israel was used to accomplish

177

:

His purposes and fulfill His prophecies.

178

:

They're some of the most specific,

incredible prophecies in Scripture.

179

:

Could we serve a God that is

more powerful or sovereign?

180

:

Remember that proverb that says

that a king's heart is like water

181

:

in the Lord's hands, and that He

moves it whichever way He pleases?

182

:

It's absolutely true.

183

:

So do you and I need to

fear about anything today?

184

:

Is anything too hard for the Lord?

185

:

Is there anything that he's

not able to work in our kids'

186

:

hearts or in our marriages?

187

:

Or in our circumstances?

188

:

Absolutely not God is going

to use this pagan King Cyrus

189

:

To bring good, to be God's

shepherd, and to rebuild the temple.

190

:

It's astounding that 45:1 even says

that Cyrus is God's anointed, which

191

:

is sometimes translated Messiah.

192

:

the historian Josephus even wrote

that Cyrus was informed of the

193

:

biblical prophecies written about

him, and it's likely that this

194

:

was done by the prophet Daniel.

195

:

I just love how God reveals Himself

and what He's going to do, and how some

196

:

prophecies are shrouded in mystery, and

we don't understand until they happen, and

197

:

some could not be more clear like these

198

:

In 45:19, God says, " I am the

Lord, and there is no other.

199

:

I did not speak in secret,

in a land of darkness.

200

:

I did not say to the offspring

of Jacob, ' Seek me in vain.'

201

:

I, the Lord, speak the truth.

202

:

I declare what is right.

203

:

Turn to me and be saved,

all the ends of the earth.

204

:

For I am God, and there is no other.

205

:

By myself I have sworn; from my mouth

has gone out in righteousness a word that

206

:

shall not return: To me every knee shall

bow, every tongue shall swear allegiance."

207

:

This new thing that God is doing is

for all the people as he says, "Be

208

:

saved to the ends of the earth."

209

:

In chapter 46, God repeats this

phrase again, " For I am the

210

:

Lord, and there is no other.

211

:

I am God, and there is none like me."

212

:

And that's why it's completely

appropriate that God condemns the lovers

213

:

of pleasure who say of themselves, "I

am, and there is no one beside me."

214

:

God tells them, "You felt

secure in your wickedness.

215

:

You said, 'No one sees me.'

216

:

Your wisdom and your

knowledge led you astray."

217

:

After God calls Israel obstinate

and stiff-necked, in Isaiah 48

218

:

verse 9, he begins, " For my

name's sake, I defer my anger.

219

:

For the sake of my praise, I restrain

it for you, that I may not cut you off.

220

:

Behold, I have refined

you, but not as silver.

221

:

I have tried you in the

furnace of affliction.

222

:

For my own sake, for

my own sake, I do it."

223

:

For how should my name be profaned?

224

:

My glory I will not give to another.

225

:

There's an elder at my church that

talks about God's glory gauntlet,

226

:

that He rightfully loves His glory.

227

:

But the thing is, God's glory is

good for you and for me because

228

:

in verse 17 He says, " I'm your

Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel.

229

:

I am the Lord your God who

teaches you to profit, who leads

230

:

you in the way you should go.

231

:

Oh, that you had paid

attention to my commandments.

232

:

Then your peace would have been

like a river and your righteousness

233

:

like the waves of the sea."

234

:

Your offspring would have been like the

sand and your descendants like its grain.

235

:

Their name would never be cut

off or destroyed from before me

236

:

God has good things stored up for us, and

when we give Him His glory and walk in

237

:

righteousness, peace is available to us

But the last line from our reading today

238

:

is a striking juxtaposition to this.

239

:

" There is no peace," says

the Lord, " for the wicked."

240

:

Heavenly Father, we acknowledge that

You are the Lord and there is no other.

241

:

And what You declare will come to pass.

242

:

You are sovereign over kings and nations.

243

:

And we ask for forgiveness when we

pray so shortsightedly, pleading

244

:

with You to change the hearts of our

family members and acting as though

245

:

this is a difficult thing for You We

recognize that sometimes you use

246

:

affliction and captivity to refine us.

247

:

So we pray that we would not

be stiff-necked, but instead

248

:

readily surrender to your ways.

249

:

May we choose and our children

choose to follow your commandments

250

:

that we could walk in the peace that

righteousness brings Thank you that

251

:

you're with us in difficult times.

252

:

We pray that our kids would experience

that when they walk through the

253

:

waters, you are with them, and through

the rivers that they would not be

254

:

overwhelmed, and through the fire

that they shall not be consumed.

255

:

But we know that's only true if

they look to you as their salvation,

256

:

and we pray you bring it about for

every child of every mom listening.

257

:

I also pray for those that feel like a

bruised reed or a faintly burning wick.

258

:

Jesus, we thank you that you

will be merciful to them.

259

:

It's in your name we pray, amen
