#42. Numbers 9-12 | Very Meek and Faithful in All My House

Do you ever feel like you're a basket case and you're falling apart? Me too. And what I love is that we serve a God that invites us to Him when we're overwhelmed, confused, and we don't know what to do. He is a God that wants to be our Savior, and that means we don't have to have it all figured out! As we read Numbers, we see time after time that God honors Moses's reliance upon Him... and it looks like you're following after his example. Keep it up, Mama.

:

I'm Stephanie Hickox.

3

:

As we continue to look at the character

of God displayed through scripture,

4

:

my goal is not to force a theme of

motherhood or a families, but rather to

5

:

encourage us to be transformed by God's

word, so we can be who he's calling us

6

:

to be, but in some passages of scripture

the applications seem so obvious and

7

:

there were many in numbers nine through

12, our scripture for today, God's

8

:

even gonna handle a sibling squabble.

9

:

In chapter nine, God reiterates

his command for the people

10

:

to keep the Passover feast.

11

:

There was a group of people that

was unclean at this time because

12

:

they were bearing their dead.

13

:

Think about it.

14

:

It's a group of two or two

and a half million people.

15

:

Surely some people will

pass away that week.

16

:

Life happens and death happens, And they

ask Moses, why can't we keep the Passover?

17

:

He says, wait, that I may hear what

the Lord will command concerning you.

18

:

It makes me think of Psalm 85 8.

19

:

I will hear what God, the Lord will say

for he will speak peace to his people.

20

:

What stands out so much

about Moses is that

21

:

he doesn't rely on his

words or his own guidance.

22

:

he continually seeks God's directions.

23

:

And the Lord says, let them

still keep the Passover.

24

:

It's sweet to me that God honors

their hearts to enter into this feast

25

:

that has so much importance as they

remember who God has been to them.

26

:

In the rest of chapter nine, we're

told that whenever the cloud would

27

:

lift up from the Teve meeting the

Israelites were to pack up and move,

28

:

there's something about this unpredictable

nature that reminds me so much about

29

:

being a mom, how you can have your day

completely planned out and think you have

30

:

everything set up for success, and then

something completely takes you off guard,

31

:

like an ER visit or a child's meltdown.

32

:

Then in chapter 10, the Lord says, sound

an alarm with the trumpet on the day of

33

:

battle, but also on the day of gladness,

34

:

This makes me look ahead to the return

of Christ when the trumpet will sound.

35

:

Just as the Israelites were

watching and waiting for what the

36

:

cloud of God's presence would do.

37

:

As believers, we should be

waiting and preparing for Christ's

38

:

return when the trumpet sounds

39

:

and chapter 11, people are

complaining about their food again.

40

:

And Understandingly.

41

:

The Lord's anger was kindled and the

fire of the Lord burned among them and

42

:

consumed some outlying parts of the camp.

43

:

Moses intercedes once again and the

fire of the Lord dies down, and 11

44

:

four it says The rabble that was

among them had a strong craving.

45

:

The rabble would've been a

mixed multitude, a term that

46

:

is only used one other time.

47

:

These were Nonis Israelites who were

coming along for the ride trying to see

48

:

if this was the God they wanted to follow.

49

:

But when it gets hard, they're

ready to throw in the towel and the

50

:

people of Israel join in weeping.

51

:

Do you feel God's frustration?

52

:

He's faithfully provided and

they're ready to go back to Egypt

53

:

with all of these fancy foods.

54

:

They imagine.

55

:

It seems they're being idealistic

because they were slaves there.

56

:

Moses goes to the Lord and says,

why don't I have your favor?

57

:

Why have you placed this

burden of these people on me?

58

:

Why do I have to keep dealing with them?

59

:

I can't carry all of this alone.

60

:

The burden is too heavy for me.

61

:

Have you had moments of your

parenting that are so discouraging,

62

:

exhausting, or overwhelming?

63

:

You're confused and you don't know what to

do, and you would just love a little break

64

:

maybe just to get your head on straight

to think about what that child needs.

65

:

The needs of the Israelites

were constant and motherhood is

66

:

constant, but like Moses, we can

continue to press into the Lord for

67

:

strength And God provides a

solution to Moses' struggle.

68

:

70 men of the elders are gathered

and God blesses them with his spirit.

69

:

He equips them to lead.

70

:

They'll bear the burden with Moses.

71

:

And when the spirit diss, descends on

these 70 elders, they start prophesying

72

:

It seems Joshua has really pure

intentions, but he's concerned he

73

:

wants Moses to put a stop to it.

74

:

But Moses says, are you jealous?

75

:

For my sake?

76

:

I Would, that all the Lord's

people were prophets, that the

77

:

Lord would put his spirit on them.

78

:

When God is bringing a blessing

on others, we should rejoice

79

:

and that is the blessing that

we live in, in the new covenant.

80

:

God has poured his

spirit on all believers.

81

:

The anger of the Lord punishes

the rabble, and while the meat was

82

:

yet between their teeth, what a

description it was consumed and

83

:

the Lord struck down those people.

84

:

There's a pattern throughout

scripture that when we give into

85

:

immediate temptation, it can

have long-term consequences.

86

:

Think about Esau.

87

:

This is definitely a message

to pass on to our kids.

88

:

To be careful because God will

provide a way out when we're tempted.

89

:

Remember that sibling

squabble I mentioned?

90

:

Let's look at that

91

:

as I read chapter 12.

92

:

Miriam and Aaron Spoke against

Moses because of the Cushite

93

:

woman whom he had married for.

94

:

He had married a Cushite woman and

they said, has the Lord indeed

95

:

spoken only through Moses?

96

:

Has he not spoken through us also?

97

:

And the Lord heard it.

98

:

now the man Moses, was very

meek, more than all people who

99

:

were on the face of the earth.

100

:

And suddenly the Lord said to Moses

and to Aaron and Miriam come out

101

:

you three to the tent of meeting.

102

:

And the three of them came out and the

Lord came down in a pillar of cloud and

103

:

stood at the entrance of the tent and

called Aaron and Miriam and they both

104

:

came forward and he said, hear my words.

105

:

If there is a prophet among

you, I the Lord, make myself

106

:

known to him in a vision.

107

:

I speak with him in a dream,

not so with my servant Moses.

108

:

He is faithful in all my house with him.

109

:

I speak mouth to mouth clearly

and not in riddles, and he

110

:

beholds the form of the Lord.

111

:

Why then were you not afraid to

speak against my servant, Moses?

112

:

And the anger of the Lord was kindled

against them, and he departed when

113

:

the cloud removed from over the

tent, behold, Miriam was lepers

114

:

like snow, and Aaron turned toward

Miriam and behold she was lepers.

115

:

And Aaron said to Moses, oh my Lord,

do not punish us because we have

116

:

done foolishly and have sinned.

117

:

Let her not be as one dead whose

flesh is half eaten away when he

118

:

comes out of his mother's womb.

119

:

And Moses cried to the Lord,

oh God, please heal her please.

120

:

But the Lord said to Moses,

if her father had what?

121

:

Spit in her face, should she not be

shamed seven days, let her be shut

122

:

outside the camp seven days and after

that she may be brought in again.

123

:

So Miriam was shut outside the

camp seven days, and the people

124

:

did not set out on the march

till Miriam was brought in again.

125

:

Miriam and Aaron are paired together,

but in the original Hebrew we're

126

:

given the feminine form of the verb.

127

:

It seems Miriam was initiating this

and that's why she's going to be the

128

:

one that receives the consequence.

129

:

Later on when she was complaining

about Moses' Cushite wife was

130

:

this Zipporah, the wife we were

introduced to in Exodus, because

131

:

Midian and Kush were perhaps related.

132

:

Or did he take a second wife?

133

:

Did something happen to Zipporah?

134

:

We don't know.

135

:

James Coley speculates that

perhaps Miriam is feeling a little

136

:

threatened that she might be losing

some of her spiritual position.

137

:

She just watched the 70 elders

be elevated and the spirit of

138

:

the Lord descended on them.

139

:

Maybe she's thinking that her

role as prophetess is going to

140

:

be threatened by Moses' wife, but

there's certainly pride in this.

141

:

If Moses is meeting with God face to

face, it would seem the Lord would've

142

:

brought this up to him already, and

that's why I love that God says,

143

:

Moses is faithful in all my house.

144

:

I've always found it fascinating

that Moses is the one recording

145

:

this and he says he was more meek

than all people on the earth.

146

:

Some translations say he was more

humble than anyone on Earth, and

147

:

I could almost picture a little

battle between him and the Lord.

148

:

And the Lord saying, write it down.

149

:

Moses.

150

:

Some people believe that this statement

about him being humble could have

151

:

been an addition later on, but I

still enjoy the image of the Holy

152

:

Spirit guiding Moses to write it.

153

:

Scripture tells us that God opposes the

proud and gives grace to the humble.

154

:

It makes sense that the Lord would choose

for his companion, someone who knows

155

:

how much he needs God, not someone who

thinks they already have it all together.

156

:

If you keep getting humbled in your

life and you thought you'd have more

157

:

figured out by now, press into the Lord

because he wants to be your savior.

158

:

He's not expecting you

to have all the answers.

159

:

When God has them all come together,

it definitely reminds me of a parent.

160

:

Ready to judge a battle

amongst their kids.

161

:

When God says that Moses is faithful

in all his house, I so want that

162

:

to be true of me, don't you?

163

:

That whatever the Lord asks me to do,

that I would be faithful and carry it to

164

:

completion, that the things that matter

to him would be the things that matter

165

:

to me.

166

:

Miriam publicly challenged Moses, and

that's why her consequence is so public.

167

:

But Moses' heartfelt intercession

displays his humility once again that

168

:

he's not holding her sin against her.

169

:

And isn't it amazing that a man who

spent so much of his time with the Lord

170

:

still was able to lead an entire nation?

171

:

And that's why I'm encouraged you're

here because you're saying, God, in all I

172

:

have to do today, I want to put you first

after reading about Moses being a very

173

:

meek, more so than anyone on the Earth.

174

:

I think it's fitting that I would pray

a section of the Beatitudes over you.

175

:

From Jesus's Sermon on

the Mount in Matthew five,

176

:

Heavenly Father, your word tells us

blessed are the poor in spirit for

177

:

theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

178

:

May we be people that beg for

you to fill us and you alone.

179

:

Blessed are those who mourn for

they shall be comforted as the

180

:

sin and suffering of this world.

181

:

Often causes grief.

182

:

god drawn near to comfort us.

183

:

Blessed are the meek for

they shall inherit the earth.

184

:

Lord, may the posture of our

hearts elevate you and you alone.

185

:

Blessed are those who hunger

and thirst for righteousness,

186

:

for they shall be satisfied.

187

:

Help us to seek your kingdom first.

188

:

and may we not be satisfied

with anything but you.

189

:

Blessed are the merciful for

they shall receive Mercy,

190

:

give us your supernatural strength

to extend grace and mercy to others.

191

:

Blessed are the pure in

heart for they shall see,

192

:

God,

193

:

Lord, may we turn away from

evil and pursue holy things.

194

:

Blessed are the peacemakers for

they shall be called sons of

195

:

God, as far as, it depends on us,

196

:

Steph: Revealed to us Lord, how we

can make peace in all situations.

197

:

Blessed are those who are persecuted

for righteousness sake, for

198

:

theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

199

:

We pray for believers across the

world who exhibit so many of

200

:

these characteristics, but are

being persecuted for your name.

201

:

Lord, we ask for eternal blessings

for them, and we pray we would be

202

:

faithful to not turn a blind eye.

203

:

Blessed are you when others revile you

and persecute you and utter all kinds of

204

:

evil against you falsely on my account.

205

:

Rejoice and be glad for your

reward is great in heaven.

206

:

Lord,

207

:

God,

208

:

Steph: we thank you

209

:

that we have the hope of heaven.

210

:

May it be our greatest aim.

211

:

And Jesus' name we pray.

212

:

Amen.
