#125. Proverbs 31 for Exhausted Moms: Why It Should Encourage You, Not Feel Like an Impossible Checklist

*This episode is longer because we need to meditate on the countercultural traits that God values in us as women!

In this final episode of our study through Proverbs, we explore the wisdom of Proverbs 30–31 and discover that God's vision for a godly woman is far more encouraging than an impossible checklist.

Many women approach Proverbs 31 feeling discouraged, overwhelmed, or convinced they're falling short. But what if this chapter isn't meant to crush us? What if it's actually a celebration of the strength, wisdom, diligence, and influence God has given women?

Join Stephanie Hickox as we walk through the closing chapters of Proverbs, examining Agur's humble prayer for daily dependence on God, King Lemuel's mother's warnings about temptation and leadership, and the famous portrait of the Proverbs 31 woman. Together we'll see how Scripture calls us to faithfulness, wisdom, generosity, kindness, and above all, the fear of the Lord.

Whether you're a busy mom, a wife, a mentor, or simply a woman seeking to follow Christ, this episode offers biblical encouragement to help you view your daily work through God's eyes.

In This Episode:

  • Why Agur's prayer for "neither poverty nor riches" is still relevant today
  • What Proverbs teaches about contentment and dependence on God
  • A mother's wisdom to her son about leadership, self-control, and defending the vulnerable
  • Understanding Proverbs 31 as encouragement rather than an impossible standard
  • Why the Proverbs 31 woman is described as strong, courageous, and wise
  • The eternal value of a mother's influence
  • What it means to have "the teaching of kindness" on your tongue
  • How distraction can keep us from focusing on what matters most
  • Why charm and outward beauty are temporary, but the fear of the Lord lasts forever

Key Scriptures:

  • Proverbs 30:5–9
  • Proverbs 30:17
  • Proverbs 31:1–9
  • Proverbs 31:10–31
  • Psalm 127:2

Key Takeaway:

The Proverbs 31 woman is not presented as an exhausting to-do list but as a beautiful picture of a life shaped by the fear of the Lord. Her strength, wisdom, generosity, diligence, and kindness flow from a heart that trusts God. As believers, our goal is not perfection but faithful dependence on Christ, who is at work in us day by day.

This is The Dwelling Place from Entrusted Ministries.

2

:

I'm Stephanie Hickox, and today,

as we conclude the book of Proverbs

3

:

with chapters 30 and 31, my hope

is that it would not feel like an

4

:

endless to-do list for you, but rather

validation, encouragement, and direction

5

:

Chapter 30 was written by Agur, who is

not mentioned anywhere else in scripture.

6

:

Some believe he was a student of

wisdom who lived about the same

7

:

time as Solomon, and some believe

that it was a pseudonym for Solomon.

8

:

This man is humble.

9

:

He acknowledges God Himself

as the source of wisdom.

10

:

There's a little debate about how

the first line should be translated.

11

:

it's written, " The man

declares, 'I am weary, O God.

12

:

I am weary, O God, and worn out.'"

13

:

I kind of like the translation

that they went with

14

:

he continues in Proverbs 30:5-9,

" Every word of God proves true.

15

:

He is a shield to those

who take refuge in Him.

16

:

Do not add to His words, lest He

rebuke you, and you be found a liar.

17

:

Two things I ask of you, deny

them not to me before I die.

18

:

Remove far from me falsehood and lying.

19

:

Give me neither poverty nor riches.

20

:

Feed me with the food

that is needful for me.

21

:

Lest I be full and deny You

and say, ' Who is the Lord?'

22

:

or lest I be poor and steal and

profane the name of my God."

23

:

This affirms our command elsewhere in

scripture to not add or subtract from

24

:

God's Word and it practically acknowledges

the temptations that occur, in poverty

25

:

and in plenty speaks definitively against

those who disrespect their parents

26

:

In verses 11 and 12, " There are

those who curse their fathers

27

:

and do not bless their mothers.

28

:

There are those who are clean in their own

eyes, but are not washed of their filth."

29

:

And in 17, " The eye that mocks a

father and scorns to obey a mother

30

:

will be picked out by the ravens of

the valley and eaten by the vultures."

31

:

This is pretty gruesome, but it

means that a young man or woman

32

:

that rebels so much against their

parents that it leads to their

33

:

demise will be ravaged by scavengers.

34

:

Let's move on to chapter 31,

The Words of King Lemuel.

35

:

It's an oracle that his mother taught him,

and Lemuel means for or belonging to God.

36

:

So this could be a descriptive

title instead of an actual name.

37

:

Ancient Jewish tradition did attribute

this to Solomon, as there's no Hebrew

38

:

record of a king named King Lemuel.

39

:

If it is another name for Solomon,

then this means that his mother was

40

:

Bathsheba, we've seen at other points

that Solomon and Bathsheba had a really

41

:

sweet relationship, and I love thinking

that this is what she passed down to him.

42

:

In fact, I think it's redemptive.

43

:

As I start to read, you'll realize how

fitting it would be if she were the

44

:

one training her son in righteousness

and warning him against being tempted.

45

:

Beginning in verse two: What

are you doing, my son?

46

:

What are you doing, son of my womb?

47

:

What are you doing, son of my vows?

48

:

Do not give your strength to women,

your ways to those who destroy kings.

49

:

It is not for kings, O Lemuel, it is not

for kings to drink wine, or for rulers

50

:

to take strong drink, lest they drink

and forget what has been decreed, and

51

:

pervert the rights of all the afflicted.

52

:

Give strong drink to the one

who is perishing, and wine

53

:

to those in bitter distress.

54

:

Let them drink and forget their poverty,

and remember their misery no more.

55

:

Open your mouth for the mute, for

the rights of all who are destitute.

56

:

Open your mouth, judge righteously,

defend the rights of the poor and needy

57

:

This mother warns her son against

the probable downfall of those who

58

:

give themselves over to alcohol.

59

:

She says a king needs to be vigilant

and alert, and when you consume

60

:

alcohol, you become vulnerable.

61

:

She tells her son, "Instead of opening

your mouth to drink, your role before

62

:

the Lord is to open your mouth on

behalf of those who are weak and

63

:

vulnerable and have no voice themselves.

64

:

A king who is intoxicated can't do this."

65

:

This teaching is for his good and

for the good of those around him

66

:

She does mention That consuming alcohol

could be a kindness to those about to

67

:

die or in very tragic circumstances.

68

:

But in taking this in the context

of the whole of scripture, we know

69

:

that all things are permissible,

but not all things are beneficial,

70

:

and we should not be mastered by

anything We're to be ruled by the

71

:

self-control and joy of the Holy Spirit.

72

:

As we read in Ecclesiastes, there is

freedom to eat, drink, and be merry.

73

:

And this is an area of

personal conviction,

74

:

The Book of Proverbs began calling

us to the fear of the Lord, and it

75

:

ends with this next profile of a

woman who certainly fears the Lord

76

:

She's described in an acrostic poem

where each line begins with a different

77

:

letter of the Hebrew alphabet.

78

:

It's basically the ideal

woman or wife from A to Z.

79

:

And I know, especially as an exhausted

mom, it can feel like an endless to-do

80

:

list in which we're missing the mark.

81

:

But remember, this is a mother instructing

a king to look for a wise partner.

82

:

And it doesn't mean that this model

woman was accomplishing all of these

83

:

things at one point in her life.

84

:

When it begins, "An excellent wife who

can find," a more literal translation

85

:

is a woman or wife of strength or valor.

86

:

Some suggest that this follows the

pattern of a military poem or celebration.

87

:

which certainly validates

the strength of a woman.

88

:

Instead of a to-do list, I want you to

realize how affirming this passage is

89

:

About the role that the Lord

has given us in our families.

90

:

I'll read it through, and then we'll

discuss these calls to righteousness.

91

:

" An excellent wife who can find?

92

:

She is far more precious than jewels.

93

:

The heart of her husband trusts in

her, and he will have no lack of gain.

94

:

She does him good and not

harm all the days of her life.

95

:

She seeks wool and flax and

works with willing hands.

96

:

She is like the ships of the merchant

and brings her food from afar.

97

:

She rises while it is yet night

and provides food for her household

98

:

and portions for her maidens.

99

:

She considers a field and buys it.

100

:

With the fruit of her hands,

she plants a vineyard.

101

:

She dresses herself with strength

and makes her arm strong.

102

:

She perceives that her

merchandise is profitable.

103

:

Her lamp does not go out at night.

104

:

She puts her hands to the distaff.

105

:

And her hands hold the spindle.

106

:

She opens her hand to the poor and

reaches out her hands to the needy.

107

:

She is not afraid of snow for

her household, for all her

108

:

household are clothed in scarlet.

109

:

She makes bed coverings for herself.

110

:

Her clothing is fine linen and purple.

111

:

Her husband is known in the gates when

he sits among the elders of the land.

112

:

She makes linen garments and sells them.

113

:

She delivers sashes to the merchant.

114

:

Strength and dignity are her clothing,

and she laughs at the time to come.

115

:

She opens her mouth with wisdom, and the

teaching of kindness is on her tongue.

116

:

She looks well to the ways

of her household and does not

117

:

eat the bread of idleness.

118

:

Her children rise up and call her blessed,

her husband also, and he praises her.

119

:

Many women have done excellently,

but you surpass them all.

120

:

Charm is deceitful and beauty

is vain, but a woman who fears

121

:

the Lord is to be praised.

122

:

Give her the fruit of her hands, and

let her works praise her in the gates

123

:

over and over, Proverbs has given us

the profile of the woman we are not to

124

:

become and not to become ensnared by

But this is a profile of a godly woman.

125

:

It isn't someone who will ride the

king's coattails It's a strong support.

126

:

If written by Bathsheba, she

would've known the privilege and the

127

:

potential to rule at the king's side.

128

:

From this chapter, I conclude

that this woman is rare.

129

:

She's intentional, wise, strong,

and she's aware of her value.

130

:

Not only is she faithful,

she's full of faith.

131

:

She's kind, praiseworthy, and God-fearing

132

:

Did you notice that the chapter

is much about her character and

133

:

very little about her appearance?

134

:

And that's why we need to keep coming

back to the words of God that are

135

:

so countercultural Verse 10 told

us, "An excellent wife who can find?

136

:

She is more precious than jewels."

137

:

This means she is rare and treasured

Verses 11 and 12 tell us, "The

138

:

heart of her husband trusts in her,

and he will have no lack of gain.

139

:

She does him good and not harm

all the days of her life."

140

:

The word gain here is a military term

meaning the spoil, and it suggests once

141

:

again that she's battling for her family.

142

:

All of you moms that are being great

stewards, buying and selling things

143

:

on Marketplace and repurposing things

you find on the side of the road,

144

:

this is really validating, isn't it?

145

:

But we also need to heed the call to be

a blessing to our husbands every single

146

:

day, doing them good and not harm.

147

:

Surely it's not a call to be a

pushover, and doing our husbands good

148

:

doesn't prohibit us from speaking up.

149

:

Many of these verses talk about the

woman's diligence and her work ethic.

150

:

She works with willing hands.

151

:

She rises while it's night and

provides food for her household

152

:

and portions for her maidens.

153

:

When we read that she's faithful

to rise early to equip her family

154

:

with what they need, we don't

need to be legalistic about this.

155

:

And certainly in those years of pregnancy

and nursing and waking with little ones

156

:

in the night, I would be very cautious

to feel conviction from that verse

157

:

Thankfully, we get to look at the whole

of scripture to develop wise principles.

158

:

Solomon wrote in Psalm 127:2, " It is in

vain that you rise up early and go late

159

:

to rest, eating the bread of anxious toil,

160

:

For he gives to his beloved sleep.

161

:

So you, mama, especially in that season

when your little ones rely on you so

162

:

much and your body needs to be strong,

get your sleep And of course, if we're

163

:

toiling out of anxiety, then that's wrong.

164

:

Even if we do get up at the crack of dawn

165

:

this excellent woman is not rising early

because she's stressed, but because she

166

:

loves those she serves and the God she

does it for And though verse 16 does

167

:

say her lamp does not go out at night,

168

:

This doesn't mean it has to

be the trajectory of our lives

169

:

Verse 16 tells us she

considers a field and buys it.

170

:

With the fruit of her hands,

she plants a vineyard.

171

:

She thinks carefully about

what she's purchasing.

172

:

There's a time to be creative

and inspired by a deal.

173

:

But in general, we should be cautious

and steward our finances well.

174

:

In verse 17, she dresses herself with

strength and makes her arms strong

175

:

This is another reference to her

character, not her appearance.

176

:

In verse eighteen, she perceives

that her merchandise is profitable.

177

:

She knows her worth and her value.

178

:

She's intentional to do things well, and

then she's confident that she's done so.

179

:

The next four lines all mention

what she does with her hands.

180

:

She puts her hands to the distaff,

and her hands hold the spindle.

181

:

She opens her hand to the poor and

reaches out her hands to the needy

182

:

Her hands are diligently working, but

they're also sacrificially giving.

183

:

She's not hoarding what she has

worked to earn, she's not afraid of

184

:

snow for her household, for all her

household are clothed in scarlet.

185

:

Now, this doesn't mean you're

not a godly woman if your kids

186

:

aren't dressed in the best.

187

:

It means that she has

thoughtfully prepared.

188

:

She knew the cold Israelite winter was

coming, and it didn't take her off guard.

189

:

But I can tell you time and again

190

:

That when I wasn't ready for something,

in the Lord's sweetness he led somebody to

191

:

give me a gift that was just what I needed

192

:

Next, she makes bed coverings for herself.

193

:

Her clothing is fine linen and

purple Even though this is suggesting

194

:

that she was more affluent, it can

remind us not to neglect ourselves.

195

:

In all of our serving for others,

it's okay to bring beauty to your

196

:

household and to dress yourself

well, not just your family

197

:

we see the fruit of her diligence

once again as she buys and sells.

198

:

And this chapter isn't telling us we

have to have a side hustle as moms,

199

:

but rather to be carefully attending

to what we have and what we acquire

200

:

Whatever your situation, whether

you're a working mom or staying home

201

:

This is a way we can be a strong support

for our families Maybe you remember that

202

:

in the first episode, I mentioned that

when God made Eve from the rib of Adam,

203

:

the Hebrew word is actually side, which

is the same word used when scripture

204

:

talks about the sides of the temple.

205

:

You need sides for everything.

206

:

A woman is pivotal.

207

:

And this chapter is a profile

of a woman who radically changes

208

:

the trajectory of her family.

209

:

They're not the same without her They

need her and they're blessed by her.

210

:

And one of the more convicting

verses for me is verse 25, " Strength

211

:

and dignity are her clothing,

212

:

and she laughs at the time to come.

213

:

She looks forward in joy, knowing

that the goodness of the Lord will

214

:

follow her all the days of her life.

215

:

In verse 26, she opens her mouth

with wisdom, and the teaching

216

:

of kindness is on her tongue.

217

:

Here's another validating verse

218

:

That God has created women

to teach and instruct.

219

:

We have the honorable influential

position of doing that in our

220

:

families and with other women

221

:

We don't just have to work and be watched.

222

:

We get to train in wisdom and kindness

When I think about who most people

223

:

attribute their success to when

they're giving a thank you speech or

224

:

celebrating an athletic achievement,

usually they're thanking their mom.

225

:

You and I have been given a position

of influence, and scripture tells us

226

:

to not despise the day of small things.

227

:

Don't let your hiddenness be a hindrance.

228

:

What you're doing has eternal value

229

:

And the faithfulness in which you teach

and train your kids will produce a harvest

230

:

the next verse tells us she looks

well to the way of her household and

231

:

does not eat the bread of idleness.

232

:

In the English translation,

it can feel, Great, you're

233

:

telling me not to be lazy again.

234

:

But if we go back to

the Hebrew, I love this.

235

:

Bread of idleness literally translates

to our eyes looking everywhere, and this

236

:

puts a whole different spin on it for me.

237

:

If we take it literally, it's not

necessarily that she isn't working

238

:

hard, it's that she's not accomplishing

things of value because she's distracted

239

:

by looking everywhere, not knowing how

to move forward in intentionality And

240

:

I think that this could even caution

us against looking too much online, to

241

:

not have our eyes looking everywhere

about what other people are doing, what

242

:

they have, or what they're posting.

243

:

We can be joyfully focused on those

God has placed in our lives, on our

244

:

families, the lost, and the needy And

what's awesome is that this woman

245

:

is getting praised for all her work.

246

:

Her children rise up and call her blessed.

247

:

Her husband also, and he praises her.

248

:

Many women have done excellently,

but you surpass them all.

249

:

Again, that term excellently that began

the poem means she's done valiantly.

250

:

And in many Jewish homes, the father

begins their Sabbath or Shabbat by giving

251

:

public praise of the wife to the family

I think that's a pretty great tradition

252

:

to have that weekly habit instead of just

an annual celebration on Mother's Day

253

:

And next, charm is deceitful and

beauty is vain, but a woman who

254

:

fears the Lord is to be praised.

255

:

Oh, we need that reminder, don't we?

256

:

As we're watching our waistlines

widen, our skin sag or wrinkle,

257

:

and our hair change color,

outwardly we are wasting away.

258

:

But if we look to Christ,

scripture tells us that inwardly

259

:

we are being renewed day by day.

260

:

You and I have the opportunity

and the choice to be made

261

:

more beautiful internally.

262

:

And you know what?

263

:

In heaven, we're gonna

get a glorified body.

264

:

Boy, am I looking forward to that

265

:

Do you remember that in the

Book of Ecclesiastes, the word

266

:

vain or vanity came up 38 times?

267

:

In the Hebrew, that's hevel.

268

:

It's a vapor.

269

:

It's fleeting, and you can't grasp it.

270

:

This is the same word used here.

271

:

When it says beauty is vain, it's a vapor.

272

:

It's not something to chase after.

273

:

We can give attention to the

way we present ourselves,

274

:

and as I like to tell my daughter,

sometimes putting on makeup kind

275

:

of feels like a fun art project.

276

:

But in a world focused on filters

and perfect pictures, you and I are

277

:

called to a beauty that cannot be

robbed and that only gets better

278

:

as we age and look to the Lord.

279

:

Heavenly Father, I pray over these

women that have an endless to-do list.

280

:

I ask that you would strengthen them

when your word feels daunting or

281

:

discouraging or like a to-be list and

when we struggle to believe that we

282

:

are becoming more beautiful I pray

you would give us encouragement that

283

:

you are at work in us and that our

families are blessed by our efforts.

284

:

Inspire our kids and our husbands

to rise up and call us blessed

285

:

And because your word says give her

the fruit of her hands, I pray that

286

:

you would bless each of these moms

Guide them in how to steward their

287

:

finances and their resources well,

and I pray that you would multiply it

288

:

and receive all the glory when you do

289

:

May our hands be open so that we

can be generous and use what we

290

:

have for you May the teaching of

kindness and wisdom be on our tongues

291

:

and help our families to

not just watch our example

292

:

But may they imitate us as we imitate you.

293

:

Ultimately, help us to be women who

laugh at the days to come because

294

:

we trust, honor, and revere you.

295

:

It's in your name we pray, Jesus.

296

:

Amen

Scripture and Prayer Devotionals for Busy Christian Moms
Moms are the busiest people we know! We're equipping Christian moms to dwell with Jesus and then to parent based on the wisdom of The Bible. If you're looking for a way to be consistent in looking to the Word of God this year, join us to make your home all about HIM! This podcast is sponsored by Entrusted Ministries and aligns with the "Entrusted with a Child's Heart" study for moms. Entrusted offers Scripture-saturated resources for churches, home groups, and individuals.
