#25. Exodus 10-13 | Specific, Yet Unspecific Directions

I know I've had to talk fast recently to get everything in, but I slow down just a little bit as we prepare to leave Egypt with the Israelites. It's a solemn exit and full of grieving for all who did not heed the word of the LORD. God gives specific instructions for honoring the Passover, but there are certainly things left unsaid. If you are in a season of waiting on God for guidance, be encouraged that you just may have what He wants you to have right now.

Speaker:

welcome to the Dwelling Place

from Entrusted Ministries.

2

:

I'm Stephanie Hickox.

3

:

In yesterday's episode, we talked

about the hardening of Pharaoh's heart.

4

:

Did Pharaoh do it?

5

:

Did God do it?

6

:

And the answer was yes.

7

:

Both occurred.

8

:

I've had multiple opportunities

to take a tour with the founder

9

:

of Epic Archeology, Ted Wright.

10

:

He is phenomenal, and

I'll link his website.

11

:

You should definitely go check him out.

12

:

Whenever you're wondering if

there's archeological evidence

13

:

for certain events in the Bible,

14

:

and he explained that having

a hard heart was absolutely

15

:

awful in the Egyptian culture.

16

:

In the detailed process Egyptians

went through to make a mummy, they

17

:

would take out a person's organs and

weigh them, and they wanted their

18

:

heart to be less than a feather.

19

:

If it wasn't they believed that

person would experience judgment

20

:

in the afterlife, and he commented

that throughout Exodus, it's truly

21

:

evident that the author had a personal

knowledge of the Egyptian culture.

22

:

He said there are hints all over that

revealed that Moses was the author and

23

:

that he was raised in Pharaoh's home.

24

:

Today we're turning the page to

Exodus Chapter 10, through 13, God

25

:

brings another plague of locusts.

26

:

This would've been an attack on

several Egyptian Gods, sapia being

27

:

one of them, and it would've been

something they prayed for protection

28

:

from In chapter 10, verse 15.

29

:

They covered the face of the whole land

so that the land was darkened and they

30

:

ate all the plants in the land and all the

fruit of the trees that the hail had left.

31

:

Not a green thing remained.

32

:

Neither tree nor planted the field

throughout all the land of Egypt.

33

:

Then Pharaoh hastily called Moses and

Aaron and said, I have sinned against

34

:

the Lord your God, and against you.

35

:

Therefore, forgive my sin.

36

:

Please only this once and plead

with the Lord your God, only

37

:

to remove this death from me.

38

:

So he went out from Pharaoh and

pleaded with the Lord, and the Lord

39

:

turned the wind into a very strong

west wind, which lifted the locusts

40

:

and drove them into the Red Sea.

41

:

Not a single locust was left in

the country of Egypt, but the Lord

42

:

heartened Pharaoh's heart and he

did not let the people of Israel go.

43

:

Then the Lord said to Moses, stretch

out your hand toward heaven, that there

44

:

may be darkness over the land of Egypt.

45

:

A darkness to be felt for three days.

46

:

It was so dark that no one even

got up and left their house.

47

:

They couldn't even see each other.

48

:

But again, God made a distinction.

49

:

This doesn't happen to the Israelites.

50

:

They dwell in light.

51

:

Pharaoh again pretends that he's repentant

and willing to let them go, but he

52

:

wants them to go without their animals.

53

:

And Moses says, no.

54

:

God wants us to make sacrifices

to him in the wilderness.

55

:

We have to take our animals.

56

:

But Pharaoh's heart was hardened and

he told them to never come back again.

57

:

And finally comes the 10th plague,

the plague of the firstborn.

58

:

Do you remember how the

Book of Exodus began?

59

:

It began with Pharaoh being insecure

at how much the Israelites were

60

:

being multiplied, and he chose

to kill all the male babies.

61

:

Well, now the Lord is saying for everyone

that does not have faith in me and does

62

:

not apply the blood of the lamb to their

doorposts, I will now take your firstborn.

63

:

This plague is really a judgment on

all of Egypt's Gods, including Pharaoh.

64

:

They believed that Pharaoh's

son would become a God.

65

:

I'm sure that they felt horrible remorse

and regret for not heeding the first nine

66

:

of God's judgments, but before the Lord

performs this act, he tells the Israelites

67

:

to go to their neighbors, the Egyptians

and ask for silver and gold jewelry.

68

:

Though the surrounding verses are

certainly serious, I think that these

69

:

are some of the funniest verses in the

Bible to imagine God gave them favor

70

:

and I just have to giggle

when I think about what this

71

:

exchange might've been like.

72

:

Hi, I'm your neighbor.

73

:

I know it's been rough

around here for a while.

74

:

We're about to go, but before we

do, I was just wondering, do you

75

:

have anything you wanna give me

76

:

On a more serious note, I wonder if

it provided an opportunity at all for

77

:

people to say, I need to understand

what is going on around here.

78

:

And who is this God that you serve as?

79

:

God describes the Passover feast.

80

:

He explains that other nations are

able to be involved in this as long

81

:

as they obey and heed his directions

82

:

we're told the Israelites are going

to leave Egypt with a mixed multitude.

83

:

Some Egyptians are gonna come with, but

not all of them will have pure motives.

84

:

And we'll read more about that later.

85

:

Let's continue with chapter 11

and the plague of the firstborn.

86

:

The Lord said to Moses, yet one

more plague I will bring upon

87

:

Pharaoh and upon Egypt afterward,

he will let you go from here.

88

:

When he lets you go, he will

drive you away completely.

89

:

Speak now in the hearing of the people.

90

:

That they ask every man of his

neighbor and every woman of her

91

:

neighbor for silver and gold jewelry.

92

:

And the Lord gave the people favor

in the sight of the Egyptians.

93

:

Moreover, the man Moses, was very

great in the land of Egypt, in

94

:

the sight of Pharaoh's servants

and in the sight of the people.

95

:

So Moses said, thus says the Lord.

96

:

About midnight, I will go out in the

midst of Egypt, and every firstborn in

97

:

the land of Egypt shall die from the

firstborn of Pharaoh who sits on his

98

:

throne, even to the firstborn of the

slave girl who's behind the hand mill

99

:

and all the firstborn of the cattle.

100

:

There shall be a great cry throughout

the land of Egypt, such as there has

101

:

never been nor ever will be again.

102

:

But not a dog shall growl against any of

the people of Israel, either man or beast,

103

:

that you may know that the Lord makes a

distinction between Egypt and Israel and

104

:

all these, your servants shall come down

to me and bow down to me saying, get out

105

:

you and all the people who follow you.

106

:

And after that

107

:

I will go out.

108

:

In chapter 12.

109

:

God reports that this Passover

event is going to be so important.

110

:

He's actually going to

give them a new calendar.

111

:

This month is to be

the beginning of months

112

:

And occurs between March

and April of our months.

113

:

Then they're given very

specific directions about how

114

:

to observe the Passover feast.

115

:

It's to be a lamb without blemish,

and they're to take the blood of the

116

:

lamb and apply it to their doorposts.

117

:

They'll eat it with bitter herbs that

represent the bitterness of slavery

118

:

And with unleavened bread.

119

:

Leaven in scripture often

represents impurity,

120

:

But for all those bread making moms,

you understand that this also means.

121

:

That they have to eat it quickly.

122

:

They don't have time

for their bread to rise.

123

:

They Are ready to leave

at a moment's notice.

124

:

In 12, 12.

125

:

God instructs for I will pass

through the land of Egypt that night

126

:

and I will strike the firstborn.

127

:

All the firstborn in the land

of Egypt, both man and beast

128

:

and on all the gods of Egypt.

129

:

I will execute judgments.

130

:

I am the Lord.

131

:

The blood shall be assigned for you on

the houses where you are, and when I see

132

:

the blood, I will pass over you and no

plague will befall you to destroy you.

133

:

When I strike the land of Egypt, this

day shall be for you a memorial day,

134

:

and you shall keep it as a feast to

the Lord throughout your generations.

135

:

As a statute forever.

136

:

You shall keep it as a feast.

137

:

And in verse 28, then the people of

Israel went out and did so as the

138

:

Lord had commanded Moses and Aaron.

139

:

So they did.

140

:

At midnight, the Lord struck down all

the firstborn in the land of Egypt.

141

:

When John the Baptist announced Jesus in

the New Testament, he said, behold the

142

:

Lamb of God who takes away the sins of

the world, Jesus is the Passover lamb.

143

:

It was only by faith in God that

the Israelites applied the blood

144

:

of the lamb on their doorposts,

145

:

and the only way that we can

escape the judgment that we deserve

146

:

because of our sin is by trusting

in Jesus Christ is our salvation.

147

:

Pharaoh finally tells them to

go to get out and to take all

148

:

of their livestock with them,

149

:

The end of chapter 12 tells us it was

a night of watching by the Lord to

150

:

bring them out of the land of Egypt.

151

:

So this same night is a night of watching,

kept by the Lord, by all the people of

152

:

Israel throughout their generations.

153

:

And in chapter 13, the Lord explains

that this Passover feast is to

154

:

be continued to be kept forever.

155

:

And certainly when they

reach the Promised Land,

156

:

it's meant to teach their kids about

God's faithfulness and that they would

157

:

never forget that what the mighty hand

God rescued his people from slavery,

158

:

from the mightiest empire in existence.

159

:

But what I'm noticing right now.

160

:

Is that God doesn't tell them how long

it's going to be before they'll be able

161

:

to observe it in the promised land.

162

:

He doesn't tell them that they're

going to rebel against him and wander

163

:

in the desert for 40 years, and that

Moses himself will never observe

164

:

the Passover in the promised land.

165

:

God knows exactly what they

need to know at this moment.

166

:

It seems he's specifically

unspecific at times.

167

:

He gives great detail

for what we need to know.

168

:

But often leaves things unsaid

that we think we need to know or

169

:

that might seem helpful to know.

170

:

He knows what our hearts can handle.

171

:

This is also evident to me in verse 17

when Pharaoh let the people go, God did

172

:

not lead them by the way of the land of

the Philistines, although that was near.

173

:

For God said, lust.

174

:

The people change their minds when

they see war and return to Egypt, but

175

:

God led the people around, by the way

of the wilderness toward the Red Sea.

176

:

God knew what his people were ready for

and they just weren't ready for war.

177

:

He led them into the wilderness

even though it was a longer journey

178

:

because he had to make them unified

as a nation before he could bring

179

:

them into the land of the promise.

180

:

But he doesn't just give

detailed directions.

181

:

He goes with them, and the Lord went

before them by day in a pillar of cloud

182

:

to lead them along the way and by night in

a pillar of fire to give them light that

183

:

they might travel by day and by night.

184

:

The pillar of cloud by day and the

pillar of fire by night did not depart

185

:

from before the people personally,

right now, I'm in a season.

186

:

Of considering some big

changes for my family.

187

:

It seems overwhelming and difficult

and the Lord might be asking us to

188

:

leave something that we have loved

for years, but like Abraham who obeyed

189

:

even when he didn't know where he was

being called to, and just like the

190

:

Israelites leaving Egypt, following

God, not knowing where they're going.

191

:

We can trust in the God who goes with us.

192

:

Our aim and goal should be to be

absolutely surrendered to the will of God.

193

:

And if that's true, then we know he

will reveal it to us when we need it.

194

:

Let's pray.

195

:

Heavenly Father, we thank

you that you go before us.

196

:

We pray that we would walk in

tune with your Holy Spirit, that

197

:

we would discern where you're

leading and follow you fully.

198

:

May we model trust even when the

variables and the unknowns are abundant.

199

:

We thank you that you are a God that does

not allow us to follow after false gods.

200

:

You demolish idols.

201

:

Even painfully at times, and we pray

for this in our own hearts, but also in

202

:

our children's hearts, as they develop

talents and interests and aspire to

203

:

careers, would their goals be surrendered

to you and their plans for their

204

:

lives be built upon the one true God?

205

:

It's in the name of the Spotless Lamb.

206

:

Jesus Christ we pray.

207

:

Amen.
