Speaker:

Welcome back to The Dwelling

Place from Entrusted Ministries.

2

:

I'm Stephanie Hickox.

3

:

If you've been on the fence at all about

the fact that God longs to dwell with

4

:

his people, today's reading will erase

any shadow of doubt from your mind.

5

:

This has been God's intention

since he created us.

6

:

If you've committed to this along the

way, I'm gonna link back to one of our

7

:

prep episodes that explains exactly

why I chose this name dwelling place.

8

:

And why it's so special for me,

particularly in my motherhood.

9

:

In today's reading, we'll focus

on Exodus chapters 25 through

10

:

28, and in every episode, I don't

just want you to hear my words.

11

:

I truly want you to hear the word of God.

12

:

So I'll begin reading in

chapter 25, verse one.

13

:

The Lord said to Moses, speak to the

people of Israel that they take from me.

14

:

A contribution from every

man whose heart moves him.

15

:

You shall receive the contribution

from me, and this is the contribution

16

:

you shall receive from them.

17

:

Gold, silver, and bronze.

18

:

Blue and purple, and scarlet yarns

and fine twined linen, goat's, hair.

19

:

Tanned Rams skins, goat skins,

acacia wood oil for the lamps,

20

:

spices for the anointing oil,

and for the fragrant incense.

21

:

Onyx stones and stones are a setting

for the EFA and for the breast piece,

22

:

and let them make me a sanctuary that I

may dwell in their midst exactly as I

23

:

show you concerning the pattern of the

tabernacle and of all its furniture.

24

:

So you shall make it.

25

:

They shall make an arc of acacia wood.

26

:

Two qubits and a half shall be

its length, a qubit and a half.

27

:

Its breadth and a qubit

and a half its height.

28

:

You shall overlay it with pure

gold inside and outside shall you

29

:

overlay it, and you shall make on

it a molding of gold around it.

30

:

You shall cast four rings of gold

for it and put them on its four feet,

31

:

two rings on the one side of it, and

two rings on the other side of it.

32

:

You shall make poles of acacia wood and

overlay them with gold, and you shall

33

:

put the poles into the rings on the sides

of the ark to carry the arc by them.

34

:

The poles shall remain

in the rings of the ark.

35

:

They shall not be taken from it, and you

shall put into the ark of the testimony

36

:

that I shall give you.

37

:

You shall make a mercy seat of pure gold.

38

:

Two cubits and a half shall be its

length and a cubit and a half its breath.

39

:

And you shall make two cherubim

of gold of hammered work.

40

:

You shall make them on the

two ends of the mercy seat.

41

:

Make one cherub on the one end

and one cherub on the other.

42

:

End of one piece with a mercy seat shall

you make the cherubim on its two ends.

43

:

The cherubim shall spread out their wings

above overshadowing the mercy seat with

44

:

their wings, their faces one to another.

45

:

Toward the mercy seat shall

the faces of the cherin be.

46

:

And you shall put the mercy seat

on the top of the arc and in the

47

:

arc you shall put the testimony

that I shall give you there.

48

:

I will meet with you and from above the

mercy seat, from between the two cherin

49

:

that are on the arc of the testimony.

50

:

I will speak with you about

all that I will give you in

51

:

commandment for the people of Israel

52

:

In these chapters, we enter a very

lengthy speech from the Lord about

53

:

exactly how he wants his home to be built.

54

:

I love it because we

get to continually hold

55

:

these two aspects of God.

56

:

His nearness also known as his

imminence and his transcendence.

57

:

He's saying, I'm going to draw

near Teal, but you need to be

58

:

careful with how you approach me.

59

:

not only are his directions for

beauty, they're also for function as

60

:

this tent will move with the people.

61

:

It is fascinating to think that

in the Book of Exodus, there

62

:

are about two chapters covering

the actual exit from Egypt.

63

:

Then not even a chapter

for the 10 Commandments,

64

:

and then 13 chapters filled

with directions about how God

65

:

wanted his tabernacle built.

66

:

It may seem lengthy, but if God is going

to be so clear, we should pay attention.

67

:

In a world where networks like HGTV

Thrive, we should certainly have

68

:

the attention span to enter in with

the Lord when he tells us how his

69

:

dwelling place is to be decorated.

70

:

Perhaps you can imagine one of

your best friends telling you

71

:

she's about to remodel her kitchen.

72

:

And if you're anything like me, you wanna

hear exactly about the whole process and

73

:

the cabinet color, and the backsplash,

and the sink, and the countertops.

74

:

And don't forget about the

light fixtures and the knobs.

75

:

Let's look to God's Word with the same

level of anticipation and excitement.

76

:

The Lord is a creator of gold and silver

and bronze, and the creator of color.

77

:

So it's neat to read about how he wants

these elements to be brought together

78

:

As women, God often uses us to make

homes for our families, and to think

79

:

through the details of how they'll use

this space and what would bless them.

80

:

How can we work with our budget

and our resources and the space

81

:

that we have to make it beautiful?

82

:

And if you've ever felt that that wasn't

a holy thing to do, I think these chapters

83

:

of scripture are going to give you a new

perspective and some freedom that that's

84

:

part of the way that God created us.

85

:

When we make beautiful places

and we long to serve others,

86

:

I really think that we're living

out part of the character of God.

87

:

He loves it when things are

done well and beauty is created,

88

:

instead of feeling shame.

89

:

If that's a hobby of yours, invite him in

and let prayer be a part of the process.

90

:

Once I was setting my table for

Easter and I was trying so diligently

91

:

to stay within a budget, I found

some beautiful ous blooms for

92

:

only 6 99, and I was so excited.

93

:

But when I placed them on my table

and little vo of glasses, it was

94

:

so obvious something was lacking

and a centerpiece was required.

95

:

Eventually I just surrendered But

on Easter morning my dear friend

96

:

came with a small bouquet of flowers

that perfectly match my table scape.

97

:

I've had things like this happen

way too many times to think that

98

:

this was just a coincidence.

99

:

God knew that I wanted to celebrate

his resurrection and his kindness

100

:

was so evident to me in that.

101

:

As we begin reading these

chapters about the tabernacle,

102

:

we see that God values creativity and

things work to skillfully onto him.

103

:

That word skillfully is

repeated over and over.

104

:

God clearly reveals to Moses

the pattern for the tabernacle

105

:

that he wants to be built.

106

:

This isn't just a copycat version

of something they had seen.

107

:

My moody commentary explains that

there are five terms that were

108

:

used to designate the tabernacle.

109

:

Initially.

110

:

It's the term sanctuary indicating

that this is a place to be

111

:

holy and set apart to the Lord.

112

:

Distinct and sacred.

113

:

The profane and unclean

are to be kept out.

114

:

Everything about it and in it was

devoted to the worship of the Lord,

115

:

and it should be used for nothing else.

116

:

Secondly, the term tabernacle comes

from the term to dwell or to abide.

117

:

This was a place for God

to dwell among his people.

118

:

Isn't it beautiful that tabernacle

is actually a noun that comes from

119

:

that verb to dwell or to abide?

120

:

It makes me think of John chapter

15 when Jesus said, I am the

121

:

vine and you are the branches.

122

:

Apart from me, you can do nothing.

123

:

And he calls us to abide in him.

124

:

The third term is tent.

125

:

this was a temporary

and portable structure.

126

:

Throughout these chapters, God describes

how it will be easily packed up and moved,

127

:

and that's beautiful because his presence

isn't just limited to a geographical

128

:

location, it goes with his people.

129

:

Fourthly, this is a attentive

meeting and the purpose of

130

:

these meetings is for worship.

131

:

And finally, God uses the term

tabernacle of the testimony.

132

:

This place was to serve as a

testimony to the Lord's power promise

133

:

and provision for relationship.

134

:

It was to bless and build up the

nation's relationship with him, and

135

:

this tabernacle or dwelling place

would set the nation of Israel apart.

136

:

It's a focal point for them.

137

:

And it reveals the entire purpose

that God called them out of Egypt.

138

:

For

139

:

in John one 14 we're told, and the

word became flesh and dwelt among

140

:

us, and we have seen His glory.

141

:

Glory as of the only son from the

Father full of grace and truth.

142

:

That word dwelt among us

is literally to tabernacle.

143

:

Jesus is the fulfillment.

144

:

So many elements of the

tabernacle will point to Jesus,

145

:

and that's why worthy of our

worship and our devotion, and it's

146

:

beautiful to see that the people.

147

:

When God calls them to bring a

contribution, that their sacrifices

148

:

actually exceeded what was needed.

149

:

They had to be asked to

stop donating so much.

150

:

I bet every pastor has prayed that that

would also happen in his congregation.

151

:

some estimates predict it could

have been between:

152

:

of gold, about 7,500 pounds of

silver and 5,300 pounds of bronze.

153

:

And where did this come from?

154

:

Largely from what the Egyptians

gave them on their way out.

155

:

I love that they're giving it back

to the Lord so willingly, and that's

156

:

our New Testament guide as well.

157

:

God loves a cheerful giver.

158

:

It's not a reason to hoard your

money if you're not tearful about it.

159

:

It's a reason to pray that God

would give you a heart to give

160

:

we're gonna get more into these tabernacle

elements in the next couple episodes,

161

:

but In chapter 25, 26 and 27,

God repeatedly tells Moses, you

162

:

shall build, you shall make.

163

:

And then finally, in 28, 3, I am

breathing a sigh of relief with Moses.

164

:

When I read, You shall speak to

all the skillful whom I have filled

165

:

with the spirit of skill that

they may make Aaron's garments to

166

:

consecrate him for the priesthood.

167

:

And then God keeps using the word they.

168

:

I don't know if it was clear to Moses from

the start that God wasn't asking him to

169

:

do all of this, but considering all of

the roles he has fulfilled for the people

170

:

thus far, I can just imagine him feeling

overwhelmed as God gave these directions.

171

:

But the Lord even has a beautiful

plan for how his dwelling

172

:

place is going to be built.

173

:

Right before that in 28, 2, God says,

you shall make holy garments for Aaron,

174

:

your brother, for glory and for beauty.

175

:

It's woven throughout these

chapters that our God is a God of

176

:

purpose, creativity, and beauty.

177

:

He is worthy of our full

pursuit and our worship.

178

:

Let's pray.

179

:

Heavenly Father, we praise you for

the opportunity to come before you.

180

:

I pray for humility in our hearts that

we would be abundantly grateful for

181

:

what Jesus purchased for us, that we

can approach your throne of grace with

182

:

confidence because of his sacrifice.

183

:

As we read about your beautiful and

intentional plans for the Israelites,

184

:

we're grateful you made a way then and

we're grateful that we were born after

185

:

the cross, but I pray that we would

never take this privilege for granted.

186

:

And I particularly pray that you

would guide us in how to parent

187

:

our children, that we could model

that this is our greatest honor

188

:

and that it would also be theirs.

189

:

I pray that the availability of

your word not lead us to neglect it.

190

:

Teach us to guide our children

into treasuring your words.

191

:

I ask That even at young ages, they would

serve you with regular devotion, that

192

:

you would refine their character so that

they would have consistent walks with

193

:

you that stem from an understanding that

nothing satisfies like your presence.

194

:

It is in the name of the one

that lives to intercede for us.

195

:

Jesus Christ that we pray.

196

:

Amen.
