Speaker:

Welcome to The Dwelling Place

from Entrusted Ministries.

2

:

I'm Stephanie Hickox.

3

:

Today we're covering Exodus 29 through 32.

4

:

Not only will we read of the infamous

account of the Golden Calf, we'll

5

:

also learn about the First Spirit

filled individual in scripture, and

6

:

it might surprise you who it is.

7

:

Yesterday we learned that the tabernacle

was indeed supposed to be a beautiful

8

:

place that God would meet with the people.

9

:

His directions point to

beauty and to function.

10

:

And again in today's reading, Exodus

29 43 tells us there I will meet

11

:

with the people of Israel and it

shall be sanctified by my glory.

12

:

I will consecrate the 10 of meeting

and the altar, Aaron also and his sons.

13

:

I will consecrate to serve me as priest.

14

:

I will dwell among the people of Israel

and will be their God and they shall

15

:

know that I am the Lord their God,

who brought them out of the land of

16

:

Egypt, that I might dwell among them.

17

:

I am the Lord their God

18

:

In chapter 29 he includes directions

for the garments of the priests and

19

:

the process for consecrating them.

20

:

I always thought it was interesting

that these beautiful stones were to

21

:

have the names of the tribes on them.

22

:

And I guess it's silly, but I think

I was picturing English names.

23

:

But in the Hebrew, remember they would've

only written down the consonants.

24

:

so actually these engravings were

much shorter than I expected,

25

:

and it was really beautiful.

26

:

And then on each shoulder, the

priest was to have six of the

27

:

tribes of Israel written on a stone.

28

:

When Isaiah nine tells us the prophecy

about Jesus, for to us, a child is born

29

:

to us, a son is given, and the government

shall be upon his shoulder and his name

30

:

shall be called Wonderful counselor.

31

:

Mighty God, everlasting

Father, prince of Peace.

32

:

Saying that the government shall be on

his shoulder is prophetically confirming

33

:

that these tribes are resting on

Jesus' shoulders as the high priest.

34

:

God commands that the priest

are to be consecrated.

35

:

By marking themselves with blood

on their right ear lobe, on their

36

:

right thumb, and on their right toe.

37

:

My MacArthur commentary clarifies

that, dabbing the blood on these

38

:

locations symbolically sanctified

the ear to hear the word of God,

39

:

the hand to do the work of God and

the foot to walk in the way of God.

40

:

Perhaps there's no correlation,

but I also think about the

41

:

locations of Jesus's wounds

42

:

where the crown of thorns was placed on

his head, his ears probably had blood,

43

:

and we know his hands and feet were

pierced as he was nailed to the cross.

44

:

Chapter 31 begins the Lord said

to Moses, see, I have called my

45

:

name Beal, the son of Yuri, son

of her, of the tribe of Judah.

46

:

And I have filled him with the spirit

of God with ability and intelligence,

47

:

with knowledge and all craftsmanship

to devise artistic designs, to work

48

:

in gold, silver, and bronze, in

cutting stones for setting and in

49

:

carving wood to work in every craft.

50

:

And behold, I have appointed with him.

51

:

Oh holy.

52

:

The son of a hisac.

53

:

Of the tribe of Dan.

54

:

And I have given to all able

men ability that they may make

55

:

all that I have commanded you.

56

:

The tent of meeting and the arc of the

testimony and the mercy seat that is on

57

:

it, and all the furnishings of the tent.

58

:

And in verse 12, and the Lord said

to Moses, you are to speak to the

59

:

people of Israel and say, above

all, you shall keep my Sabbaths.

60

:

For this is a sign between me and you

throughout your generations that you

61

:

may know that I, the Lord sanctify you.

62

:

You shall keep the Sabbath

because it is holy for you.

63

:

Everyone who profay it

shall be put to death.

64

:

Whoever does any work on it, that soul

shall be cut off from among his people.

65

:

Six days shall work be done, but

the seventh day is a Sabbath of

66

:

solemn rest wholly to the Lord.

67

:

Whoever does any work on the

Sabbath day shall be put to death.

68

:

Therefore, the people of Israel

shall keep the Sabbath observing the

69

:

Sabbath throughout their generations.

70

:

It is a covenant forever.

71

:

It is a sign forever between me and the

people of Israel that in six days the

72

:

Lord made heaven and earth and on the

seventh day he rested and was refreshed

73

:

and he gave to Moses when he had finished

speaking with him on Mount Sinai, the

74

:

two tablets of the testimony tablets of

stone, written with the finger of God.

75

:

When God gave the IC covenant,

the rainbow was the sign when he

76

:

provided the Abrahamic covenant.

77

:

Circumcision was a sign.

78

:

And now in the Sinai Covenant,

the Sabbath is the sign.

79

:

We'll continue to talk about why this

revealed their trust in God and why

80

:

it set them apart as a nation end, but

there's no questioning how important

81

:

this was to the Lord that they obey him.

82

:

my Moody commentary includes a

few quotes that are so beautiful.

83

:

Regarding Bele and oh holy AB,

84

:

being filled with the spirit is having

from God the ability to do and say exactly

85

:

what God wants done And then later they

quote It is of some interest that the

86

:

first spirit-filled individual in the

Bible is not a patriarch or a prophet

87

:

or a priest, but a construction foreman.

88

:

The Bible sanctifies the work

and craftsmanship of the labor

89

:

what one does with one's hands can

be as sacred as what one does with

90

:

one's mind, and I think we can

take this as another indicator.

91

:

That we can worship God in so many

ways and the different things we

92

:

go about in motherhood, that we

can do it onto the Lord in our

93

:

creativity in the process is unto him.

94

:

God fills a holy AB and beil with wisdom

about how to accomplish exactly what

95

:

he's calling them to with the resources

that they have in the wilderness.

96

:

the names of these craftsmen actually

inspired my profile on Pinterest, And

97

:

now we'll read about using creativity in

a way that absolutely does not glorify

98

:

the Lord as Aaron creates the golden

calf, in chapter 32, beginning in verse

99

:

one, we read when the people saw that

Moses delayed to come down from the

100

:

mountain, the people gathered themselves

together to Aaron and said to him.

101

:

Up make us gods who shall go before us.

102

:

As for this, Moses, the man who brought

us up out of the land of Egypt, we

103

:

do not know what has become of him.

104

:

So Aaron said to them,

105

:

take off the rings of gold that are in

the ears of your wives, your sons, and

106

:

your daughters, and bring them to me.

107

:

So all the people took off the

rings of gold that were in their

108

:

ears and brought them to Aaron.

109

:

And he received the gold from their

hand and fashioned it with the

110

:

graving tool and made a golden calf.

111

:

And they said, these are your

gods O Israel who brought you

112

:

up out of the land of Egypt.

113

:

When Aaron saw this, he built an

altar before it, and Aaron made a

114

:

proclamation and said, tomorrow

shall be a feast to the Lord.

115

:

And they rose up early the next day

and offered burnt offerings And brought

116

:

peace offerings and the people sat

down to eat and drink and rose up

117

:

to play to keep it family friendly.

118

:

I will just say that this is

not a righteous celebration.

119

:

They're bringing some very unrighteous

pagan practices from Egypt into

120

:

their worship and they're combining

it with the worship of the Lord.

121

:

This is known as syncretism.

122

:

When I interviewed the amazing ministry

leader, Sylvia Dervin, she said she

123

:

thought that this is one of the biggest

problems plaguing Christian motherhood

124

:

today, that we're taking the Bible,

but then we're also adding all of these

125

:

books that we're reading and we're

saying, I'll obey the Bible if these

126

:

parenting books tell me it's a good idea.

127

:

She rightly pointed us back to the

word of God being our sole authority.

128

:

Yes, we should seek and gather wisdom,

129

:

but if it contradicts with God's word,

130

:

then we know where our

allegiance should lie.

131

:

I will link her episode in

the show notes because she is

132

:

certainly filled with the spirit.

133

:

When the Lord tells Moses what his

people are doing with the golden

134

:

calf, he says, I'm going to destroy

them and start again with you, Moses.

135

:

And once again, we see

the power of intercession.

136

:

Moses tells the Lord, this

isn't good for your reputation.

137

:

You don't want Egypt to see

that you brought the people out

138

:

just so you could destroy him.

139

:

God is gracious and he

relents in his anger.

140

:

But Moses meets Joshua on the way

down from the mountain, and then

141

:

when they go down to see how evil

the celebration is, Moses is furious.

142

:

He throws any breaks.

143

:

The tablets that were written with

the finger of God, he rebukes Aaron.

144

:

And then there is a judgment

for those who won't repent.

145

:

It is one of those classic Sunday school

stories, and I thought I had a pretty

146

:

good grasp on it until I read a portion

from 10 Words to Live by by Jen Wilkin.

147

:

she says The first commandment

prohibits worship of anything other

148

:

than God, but the second prohibits

worship of any version of God less

149

:

than God, specifically through images.

150

:

She goes on to explain.

151

:

One of the principle deities of Egypt was

the bull God Aus, and the supreme head of

152

:

the Canaanite Pantheon was the bull God.

153

:

Al Bull worship was all the rage in the

region, but it is a knobby need calf, not

154

:

a raging bull that Aaron manufactures.

155

:

When Aaron conceives of a Yahweh

of his own imagining, he produces

156

:

a non-threatening, approachable

version of the principle gods

157

:

of the surrounding pagans.

158

:

And so do we.

159

:

Anytime we take the attributes of the

gods, the world around us worships

160

:

and apply them to God to make him

more palatable and less threatening,

161

:

more accommodating, and less

thunderous, we produce a graven image.

162

:

I always focused on the idolatry

aspect of it, but never how insulting

163

:

it actually was that it was a calf.

164

:

I think she's right that we often

do try to adjust or soften the God

165

:

of the Bible, but he deserves to

be worshiped for exactly who he is.

166

:

Let's pray.

167

:

Heavenly Father, we thank you

that your Holy Spirit empowered

168

:

men to do the work of the temple.

169

:

And I pray over every woman that's

listening because we know that you

170

:

have called them to holy work as well.

171

:

I pray that they would do it through

the power of your Holy Spirit, that

172

:

as they go about their day, even in

the little things that they would

173

:

know, God equipped me for this.

174

:

That when they need more knowledge

or wisdom about how to solve

175

:

something that they would ask you

to guide them and feel clarity that

176

:

you do when they're weary and need

strength for the tasks before them.

177

:

I pray that they would feel your

spirit helping them persevere

178

:

and continue for your glory.

179

:

help us to throw off synchronism that

exists in our hearts and reveal to

180

:

us where we might be holding onto

idols that could never satisfy.

181

:

We pray that as our kids grow

in their faith, that we would be

182

:

guiding them toward the one true God.

183

:

Prevent us from

compromising your character.

184

:

as we strive to explain you to our

children or to the watching world,

185

:

give us the words to say as we explain

how perfect and holy and good you are,

186

:

even when we watch suffering around us.

187

:

Thank you for the mercy you showed

here, and we praise you for the

188

:

mercy we have received through

Jesus Christ, our high priest.

189

:

Amen.
