#163. Mom, Your Child's Choices Are Not a Verdict on Your Motherhood | Jeremiah 31-36

What if your child’s disobedience isn’t a reflection of your parenting? What if, instead of growing weary over every wrong choice, you could entrust your children to the God who is faithful to pursue, discipline, restore, and do good?

In this episode of The Dwelling Place Bible Podcast for Busy Moms, Stephanie Hickox walks through Jeremiah 31–36 and explores some of the most beautiful promises in the book of Jeremiah—including the New Covenant, God’s promise to restore His people, and His desire to do good to them.

After so many chapters of judgment and rebellion, Jeremiah 31–36 gives us a breathtaking glimpse of God’s steadfast love, faithfulness, discipline, mercy, and future hope.

And for moms, these chapters offer an important reminder: we can faithfully teach, train, discipline, and pray for our children without believing that every choice they make is a measure of our effectiveness as parents.

In This Episode, We’ll Explore:

  • Why Jeremiah’s purchase of a field while sitting in prison demonstrated incredible faith in God’s promises
  • The beautiful promise that God would make a new covenant with His people
  • What it means that God promises, “I will give them one heart and one way”
  • Jeremiah 32:17 and the reminder that nothing is too hard for God
  • Why God’s discipline of Judah was not inconsistent with His goodness
  • How the New Covenant points us ultimately to Jesus Christ
  • The biblical connection between listening and obeying God
  • Why our children’s disobedience doesn't necessarily mean that we have failed as mothers
  • How to continue faithfully parenting when our children make choices that grieve us
  • Jeremiah 33:3 and the importance of understanding familiar Bible verses in their context
  • The contrast between Josiah and his son Jehoiakim and what it teaches us about parenting and our children’s choices
  • Why we can have hope for our children without placing our hope in our own parenting performance
  • How Jeremiah 31–36 can encourage weary Christian moms to persevere

📖 Key Scriptures in This Episode

Jeremiah 31:10–14 — God promises to gather, shepherd, comfort, and satisfy His people.

Jeremiah 32:17“Nothing is too hard for you.”

Jeremiah 32:40–41 — God promises to give His people one heart and one way, put His fear in their hearts, and rejoice in doing them good.

Jeremiah 33:3“Call to me and I will answer you, and will tell you great and hidden things that you have not known.”

Jeremiah 33:14–16 — The promise of the righteous Branch from David and the coming King whose name is “The LORD is our righteousness.”

Jeremiah 35:13–15 — God repeatedly calls His people to listen, receive instruction, and turn from their evil ways.

Jeremiah 36 — The contrast between Josiah's humble response to God's Word and Jehoiakim's rejection and destruction of the scroll.

❤️ Encouragement for Christian Moms

One of the most encouraging parenting lessons in this passage is found in something that doesn't happen.

God faithfully instructed His people. He warned them. He sent prophets. He called them to repentance. He patiently communicated His truth.

And they still rebelled.

That reality can help us release the burden of believing that our children's choices are always a referendum on our parenting.

We are called to faithfully teach our children God's Word, establish loving boundaries, discipline them, model repentance, and point them toward Christ. But our children have hearts of their own.

Josiah was a faithful king, yet his son Jehoiakim responded to God's Word with shocking arrogance. Their example reminds us that even faithful parents cannot control the hearts of their children.

That doesn't mean our parenting doesn't matter. It means we don't have to carry the responsibility that belongs to God alone.

So if you're weary today, take heart. Keep teaching. Keep praying. Keep modeling faithfulness. Keep bringing your children before the Lord—and trust the God who loves them even more than you do.

🌿 The New Covenant and Our Hope in Christ

Jeremiah's promises ultimately point us toward something far greater than Judah's restoration from exile.

God promised an everlasting covenant, a transformed heart, a people who would know and fear Him, and a righteous Branch from the line of David.

That promise finds its fulfillment in Jesus Christ.

As Christian moms, our ultimate hope isn't that we will parent perfectly or that our children will always make wise choices. Our hope is in the Lord who is our righteousness.

And that changes the way we parent.

We can faithfully persevere without fear.

We can discipline without despair.

We can pray without pretending we control the outcome.

And we can entrust our children to the God who promises to do good to His people.

🙏 In This Episode's Prayer

Stephanie prays for weary mothers who are faithfully parenting day after day. She asks God for wisdom to discern which battles matter, endurance when parenting feels exhausting, and faith to trust Him even when a child's choices don't match what they have been taught.

She also prays the promises of Jeremiah 32 over our children—that they would have “one heart and one way,” fear the Lord, remain faithful to Him, and experience His goodness.

:

I'm Stephanie Hickox and in today's

reading of Jeremiah 31 through 36,

3

:

God allows Jeremiah to speak much

about the future hope of the people.

4

:

After decades of warning of their

impending judgment, in these chapters, we

5

:

have rich insights into God's character

His desire to bless and dwell with

6

:

His people In chapters 30 through 33,

Jeremiah begins to tell of a new covenant

7

:

God will initiate with His people.

8

:

In 31:10 through 14, " Hear the word

of the Lord, O nations, and declare

9

:

in it the coastlands far away.

10

:

Say he who scattered Israel will

gather him and will keep him

11

:

as a shepherd keeps his flock.

12

:

For the Lord has ransomed

Jacob, and has redeemed him

13

:

from hands too strong for him.

14

:

They shall come and sing aloud on the

height of Zion, and they shall be radiant

15

:

over the goodness of the Lord, over the

grain, the wine, and the oil, and over

16

:

the young of the flock and the herd.

17

:

Their life shall be like a watered

shed, and they shall languish no more.

18

:

Then shall the young women rejoice

in the dance, and the young

19

:

men and the old shall be merry.

20

:

I will turn their mourning into joy.

21

:

I will comfort them and give them gladness

22

:

For sorrow.

23

:

I will feast the soul of the

priests with abundance, and my

24

:

people shall be satisfied with

my goodness, declares the Lord.

25

:

Isn't that such a beautiful reality?

26

:

And my people shall be

satisfied with my goodness.

27

:

In chapter 32, even though Jeremiah

is in prison at this point,

28

:

God calls him to buy a field.

29

:

Now, this seems like a pretty radical

call when you're in prison, And

30

:

when the Babylonians had already

taken over that portion of land.

31

:

But Jeremiah obeys because it

reveals that he has faith in all the

32

:

promises that the Lord is saying.

33

:

He believes God will bring

the people back to the land.

34

:

it possibly also indicates the fact

that Jeremiah was wealthier than some

35

:

of the other prophets After this

transaction, Jeremiah praises the Lord

36

:

and as I read this portion, I want you

to listen for the rich theology and what

37

:

we're reminded about God's character

38

:

Beginning in 32:17 Lord God, it is you

who have made the heavens and the earth.

39

:

By your great power and

by your outstretched arm,

40

:

nothing is too hard for you.

41

:

You show steadfast love to thousands,

but you repay the guilt of fathers

42

:

to their children after them.

43

:

O great and mighty God, whose name is

the Lord of hosts, great in counsel and

44

:

mighty in deed, whose eyes are open

to all the ways of the children of man,

45

:

rewarding each one according to his ways

and according to the fruit of his deeds.

46

:

You have shown signs and wonders in

the land of Egypt, and to this day in

47

:

Israel and among all mankind, and have

made a name for yourself as at this day.

48

:

You brought your people Israel out

of the land of Egypt with signs

49

:

and wonders, with a strong hand and

outstretched arm, and with great terror.

50

:

And you gave them this land, which you

swore to their fathers to give them,

51

:

a land flowing with milk and honey.

52

:

And they entered and

took possession of it.

53

:

But they did not obey your

voice or walk in your law.

54

:

They did nothing of all

you commanded them to do.

55

:

Therefore, you have made all

this disaster come upon them.

56

:

And behold, the siege mounds have

come up to the city to take it.

57

:

And because of sword and famine

and pestilence, the city is given

58

:

into the hand of the Chaldeans

who are fighting against it.

59

:

What you spoke has come to

pass, and behold, you see it.

60

:

Yet you, O God, have said to

me, " Buy the field for money and get

61

:

witnesses, though the city is given

into the hands of the Chaldeans."

62

:

The word of the Lord came to

Jeremiah: " Behold, I am the

63

:

Lord, the God of all flesh.

64

:

Is anything too hard for me?

65

:

Therefore thus says the Lord:

'Behold, I am giving this city into

66

:

the hands of the Chaldeans and into

the hand of Nebuchadnezzar king of

67

:

Babylon, and he shall capture it.

68

:

The Chaldeans who are fighting against

this city shall come and set this city on

69

:

fire and burn it, with the houses on whose

roofs offerings have been made to Baal

70

:

and drink offerings have been poured out

to other gods, to provoke me to anger.'"

71

:

For the children of Israel and the

children of Judah have done nothing

72

:

but evil in my sight from their youth.

73

:

The children of Israel have done nothing

but provoke me to anger by the work

74

:

of their hands, declares the Lord.

75

:

This city has aroused my anger and

wrath from the day it was built to this

76

:

day, so that I will remove it from my

sight because of all the evil of the

77

:

children of Israel and the children of

Judah, that they did provoke me to anger

78

:

Their kings and their officials,

their priests and their prophets,

79

:

the men of Judah and the inhabitants

of Jerusalem, they have turned to

80

:

me their back and not their face.

81

:

And though I have taught them

persistently, they have not

82

:

listened to receive instruction.

83

:

They set up their abominations

in the house that is called

84

:

by my name to defile it.

85

:

They build the high places of Baal in

the valley of the Son of Hinnom to offer

86

:

up their sons and daughters to Molech,

though I did not command them, nor did

87

:

it enter into my mind that they should do

this abomination, to cause Judah to sin

88

:

Now therefore thus says the Lord, the

God of Israel, concerning this city of

89

:

which you say, ' It is given into the

hand of the king of Babylon, by sword,

90

:

by famine, and by pestilence': Behold, I

will gather them from all the countries

91

:

to which I drove them in my anger, and

my wrath, and in great indignation.

92

:

I will bring them back to this place,

and will make them dwell in safety.

93

:

And they shall be my people, and I

will be their God I will give them one

94

:

heart and one way that they may fear

me forever for their own good and the

95

:

good of their children after them.

96

:

I will make with them an everlasting

covenant that I will not turn away

97

:

from doing good to them, and I will

put the fear of me in their hearts

98

:

that they may not turn from me.

99

:

I will rejoice in doing them good,

and I will plant them in this

100

:

land in faithfulness with all

my heart and with all my soul.

101

:

For thus says the Lord, " Just as I

have brought all this great disaster

102

:

upon this people, so I will bring upon

them all the good that I promised them."

103

:

I chose this to be our reading for

today because of how much it affirms

104

:

regarding the character of God after

many chapters of sorrow and suffering

105

:

It's beautiful to hear Jeremiah rejoicing

in the character of God and then God

106

:

gives us a history lesson on exactly

why His people are being disciplined

107

:

but then in the most

radical of transitions

108

:

God pivots to provide these

incredibly beautiful promises.

109

:

and they're some of my very favorite

verses to pray over my kids, so that's

110

:

how we'll be ending the episode Let me

mention a few of those blessings again.

111

:

God will gather them.

112

:

He will make them dwell in safety.

113

:

He will give them one heart and one way.

114

:

They will fear Him forever for their

good and the good of their children.

115

:

God will make an everlasting

covenant, and He will not turn

116

:

away from doing good to them.

117

:

He'll put the fear of God in their

hearts so they won't turn away from Him.

118

:

He will rejoice in doing them good

and plant them in the land with all

119

:

His heart and with all His soul.

120

:

To the extent that He brought discipline,

He will now bring blessing and favor

121

:

Jesus talked about this new covenant

in the Last Supper, and some of these

122

:

promises are already being fulfilled

by anyone, Jew or Gentile, who has

123

:

professed belief in Jesus Christ

124

:

and we look forward to the day

when all of it will be fulfilled.

125

:

by our righteous King.

126

:

As I've said many times, I never

want to force the parenting theme

127

:

But as much as I'm saddened over the

people's sin in these chapters, I'm

128

:

also somewhat encouraged that God

persistently, effectively communicated

129

:

the truth and the law to the nation,

and they did not obey and honor Him

130

:

That might seem like an odd statement,

but it reminds me not to fixate on my

131

:

kids' disobedience or to think it's

all about me, when in fact My kids

132

:

and your kids all have sin natures.

133

:

And just because a child wants to do their

own thing, whether it's wearing what they

134

:

wanna wear, sneaking another treat, trying

to have more screen time or more time

135

:

with a friend, that doesn't necessarily

say anything about their relationship

136

:

with us or our effectiveness as mothers.

137

:

I'm thankful that we can have God's

model to parent in light of eternity

138

:

And to not grow weary even when our

kids' choices are entirely wearisome

139

:

And I haven't mentioned it in a while,

but that's why our ministry exists.

140

:

Entrusted With a Child's Heart

is all about bringing these

141

:

biblical insights together

142

:

to help you focus on what truly matters

to the Lord about your parenting.

143

:

As always, it'll be

linked in the show notes

144

:

if you'd like to learn more.

145

:

As we move on to Jeremiah

chapter 33, we read 33:3.

146

:

It's a well-known, beautiful

verse, and some even include it

147

:

in their gospel presentation.

148

:

While Jeremiah is in prison, God tells

him, " Call to me and I will answer

149

:

you, and will tell you great and

hidden things that you have not known."

150

:

Even though they could probably

feel the wall shaking from the

151

:

attack of the Chaldean army.

152

:

In 33:9, God says, " And this city

shall be to me a name of joy, a

153

:

praise and a glory before all the

nations of the earth, who shall hear

154

:

of all the good that I do for them.

155

:

They shall fear and tremble

because of all the good and all

156

:

the prosperity I provide for it."

157

:

Wow,

158

:

have you ever been afraid

of God's abundant blessing?

159

:

Continuing to speak to that new

covenant, beginning in verse fourteen,

160

:

we read, " Behold, the days are

coming," declares the Lord, " when I

161

:

will fulfill the promise I made to the

house of Israel and the house of Judah.

162

:

In those days and at that time, I will

cause a righteous branch to spring

163

:

up for David, and he shall execute

justice and righteousness in the land.

164

:

In those days, Jerusalem will

dwell securely, and this is the

165

:

name by which it will be called:

The Lord is our righteousness."

166

:

It's a beautiful promise And one day

Jesus will reign as priest and king.

167

:

But unfortunately, not everything from

our reading today was hope and beauty.

168

:

we encounter a circumstance in which

King Zedekiah freed his slaves but then

169

:

took them back, completely contradicting

the way God said you were supposed to

170

:

treat people who needed to pay off debts

God's intention was that they could

171

:

maintain their dignity and have honor

172

:

while being restored financially In fact,

God says that they profaned His name by

173

:

how they dealt with this issue of slavery.

174

:

That's a very strong rebuke And so that we

continue to understand that listening and

175

:

obeying is a thoroughly biblical concept,

I wanted to read Jeremiah:

176

:

" Then the word of the Lord came to

Jeremiah, ' Thus says the Lord of hosts,

177

:

the God of Israel, " Go and say to the

people of Judah and the inhabitants

178

:

of Jerusalem, Will you not receive

instruction and listen to my words?"

179

:

declares the Lord.'"

180

:

I have spoken to you persistently,

but you have not listened to me.

181

:

I have sent to you all my servants, the

prophet, all my servants, the prophets,

182

:

sending them persistently saying, ' Turn

now every one of you from his evil

183

:

way and amend your deeds, and do not

go after other gods to serve them,

184

:

and then you shall dwell in the land

that I gave to you and your fathers.'

185

:

But you did not incline

your ear or listen to me."

186

:

as we read chapter 36, we're

invited to learn more about Baruch's

187

:

responsibilities and faithfulness in

attending to Jeremiah as a scribe.

188

:

Even while Jeremiah is in prison, Baruch

stands by him, writing down all the

189

:

words that Jeremiah dictates to him,

those that he has heard from the Lord

190

:

Jehoiakim or Jehoiakim, however

you'd like to pronounce it, was the

191

:

second to the last king of Judah.

192

:

he sends for this scroll that Jeremiah

is writing, and in a horrific and wicked

193

:

display of the lack of the fear of the

Lord, as one of his men reads it to him,

194

:

The king would cut off a few

columns of the scroll and throw

195

:

them into the fire until the

entire scroll had been burned up.

196

:

It would be awful to do this to

any portion of the word of God

197

:

but this is the peak of arrogance

To burn these warnings about

198

:

his own impending judgment.

199

:

His heart was abundantly hard.

200

:

I'm still getting over the fact that

Amy burned Jo's writing in Little

201

:

Women and Joe had to rewrite it all.

202

:

And side note, Jeremiah and Baruch have

to redo this entire scroll, and they do.

203

:

But how much more wicked is

this That they're burning

204

:

the word of God Now get this.

205

:

Do you know who Jehoiakim's father was?

206

:

Josiah.

207

:

Remember how radically different Josiah's

response to hearing the word of God was?

208

:

Instead of tearing the word of

God in the scroll, he tore his

209

:

clothes in repentance and humility.

210

:

These two men may share DNA, but their

hearts were far from each other It's

211

:

difficult to understand how with all

of Josiah's reforms and faithfulness

212

:

to the Lord that his son could act so

irreverently toward the holy word of God

213

:

We aren't given any indication in

scripture that Josiah wasn't a faithful

214

:

father, and we could be completely

discouraged by this reality, or we

215

:

can take all of this unsettledness

right before the Lord, praying His

216

:

Word for our kids because we know

these are promises He longs to answer

217

:

Heavenly Father, we praise you for

your faithful example as a father.

218

:

We thank you for the way you

have parented and disciplined us.

219

:

And Lord, we confess to you that often

our role as mothers and our attempts to be

220

:

faithful day in and day out are wearying.

221

:

We need your Holy Spirit to help

us endure well for your glory.

222

:

Help us to discern the battles

that are important to you and which

223

:

ones could be left for another

time or another season Give us a

224

:

vision of your plans for our kids

225

:

and help us to have faith

226

:

So that we can have hope even when their

choices don't match up with what we've

227

:

taught them We pray you would give our

kids one heart and one way that they would

228

:

fear you forever for their own good and

for the good of their children after them.

229

:

We pray that they would be included in

your everlasting covenant, that you would

230

:

not turn away from doing good to them.

231

:

Put the fear of you in their hearts

that they would not turn away from you.

232

:

Rejoice in doing them good and plant

them in faithfulness with all your

233

:

heart and with all your soul We thank

you that you've entrusted them to

234

:

us and that you love them so dearly.

235

:

And we pray all of this in the

Lord who is our righteousness

236

:

Jesus Christ, amen
