:I'm Stephanie Hickox.
3
:Today we'll talk about Proverbs 13
through 16, and I'm enjoying the fact
4
:that God beautifully inspired Solomon
to weave so many different topics
5
:throughout this book of the Bible, so
often in life, we go to read a book
6
:about parenting or health or productivity
and we study a topic in isolation.
7
:But when we read through God's Word
8
:The verses and principles
apply to so many areas
9
:So that the Lord is continually
refining us in all aspects of our lives
10
:This past year, I copied the entire
book of Proverbs into a Word document
11
:and printed it out for my kids.
12
:We went through and highlighted
the different themes that we saw.
13
:Some of it was a little bit inspired
14
:by the Get the Word Out color chart and
system that I can link to on our website.
15
:But it was a really neat activity for
my kids To help them see the different
16
:themes that were emerging in Proverbs.
17
:Every time we saw something on
wisdom, righteousness, or the fear
18
:of God, we highlighted that in pink.
19
:When there were warnings of bad
influences, like the bad lady or harmful
20
:friendships, we put those in orange.
21
:When a verse related to finances
or generosity, we chose green.
22
:For family and marriage, yellow because
diligence and laziness come up so often
23
:We noted those and then there's so much
to say about our words and our speech.
24
:We noted that in another color
25
:I know at the beginning of Proverbs,
there were some topics you might
26
:not wanna cover with younger kids
27
:But this would be a great activity
to do, especially once you get
28
:to chapter 10, because it's when
those two-line proverbs begin
29
:As we go through our reading today,
you'll probably hear something that
30
:applies to each one of your kids
31
:In order to use our time best, I've
selected about 10 verses from each
32
:chapter that I hope are encouraging
and convicting for our parenting
33
:From chapter 13,
34
:13:1, A wise son hears his
father's instruction, but a
35
:scoffer does not listen to rebuke.
36
:13:3, Whoever guards his
mouth preserves his life.
37
:He who opens wide his lips comes to ruin.
38
:13:4, The soul of the sluggard craves
and gets nothing, while the soul
39
:of the diligent is richly supplied.
40
:Steph: 13:11: Wealth gained hastily
will dwindle, but whoever gathers
41
:little by little will increase it.
42
:13:12: Hope deferred makes the heart sick,
but a desire fulfilled is a tree of life
43
:13:14.
44
:The teaching of the wise is a fountain
of life, that one may turn away from
45
:the snares of death Thirteen eighteen.
46
:Poverty and disgrace come to
him who ignores instruction, but
47
:whoever heeds reproof is honored
48
:13:20.
49
:Whoever walks with the wise
becomes wise, but the companion
50
:of fools will suffer harm.
51
:13:21.
52
:Disaster pursues sinners,
but the righteous are
53
:rewarded with good And 13:24.
54
:Whoever spares the rod hates
his son, but he who loves him
55
:is diligent to discipline him."
56
:14:1, The wisest of women
builds her house, but folly with
57
:her own hands tears it down.
58
:14:2, Whoever walks in uprightness
fears the Lord, but he who is
59
:devious in his ways despises him.
60
:14:12, There is a way that seems
right to a man, but its end is
61
:the way of death 14, 15, and 16.
62
:The simple believes everything, but
the prudent gives thought to his steps.
63
:One who is wise is cautious
and turns away from evil, but a
64
:fool is reckless and careless.
65
:14:23 In all toil there is profit:
but mere talk tends only to poverty
66
:14:26 and 27: In the fear of the
Lord one has strong confidence, and
67
:his children will have a refuge.
68
:The fear of the Lord is a fountain
of life, that one may turn
69
:away from the snares of death.
70
:14:29: Whoever is slow to anger
has great understanding, but he who
71
:has a hasty temper exalts folly.
72
:14:30: A tranquil heart gives life to
the flesh, but envy makes the bones rot
73
:14:31, "Whoever oppresses a poor
man insults his maker, but he who is
74
:generous to the needy honors Him."
75
:Fifteen one: A soft answer turns away
wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.
76
:Fifteen five: A fool despises
his father's instruction, but
77
:whoever heeds reproof is prudent.
78
:Fifteen ten: There is severe discipline
for him who forsakes the way.
79
:Whoever hates reproof
will die:
80
:Better is a little with the
fear of the Lord than great
81
:treasure and trouble with it.
82
:Better is a dinner of herbs where love
is than a fattened ox and hatred with it
83
:15:20, A wise son makes a glad father, but
olish man despises his mother:
84
:Without counsel, plans fail, but
with many advisors they succeed
85
:and 15:28 through 33.
86
:The heart of the righteous ponders
how to answer, but the mouth of
87
:the wicked pours out evil things.
88
:The Lord is far from the wicked, but
He hears the prayer of the righteous.
89
:The light of the eyes rejoices the
heart, and good news refreshes the bones.
90
:The ear that listens to life-giving
reproof will dwell among the wise.
91
:Whoever ignores instruction
despises himself, but he who listens
92
:to reproof gains intelligence.
93
:The fear of the Lord is instruction in
wisdom, and humility comes before honor
94
:Chapter 16.
95
:All the ways of a man are pure in his
own eyes, but the Lord weighs the spirit.
96
:16:5, Everyone who is arrogant in
heart is an abomination to the Lord.
97
:Be assured he will not go unpunished.
98
:16:6 through 9.
99
:By steadfast love and faithfulness,
iniquity is atoned for, and by the fear
100
:of the Lord one turns away from evil.
101
:When a man's ways please the
Lord, he makes even his enemies
102
:to be at peace with him.
103
:Better is a little with righteousness
than great revenues with injustice.
104
:The heart of a man plans his way,
but the Lord establishes his steps
105
:16, Pride goes before destruction
and a haughty spirit before a fall
106
:16:20, " Whoever gives thought to
the word will discover good, and
107
:blessed is he who trusts in the Lord."
108
:And 16:32, " Whoever is slow to
anger is better than the mighty,
109
:I appreciate the way that
Solomon repeats these themes
110
:over and over in different ways
111
:So that hopefully it sinks in.
112
:We hear the importance of our words, that
peace and joy matter more than wealth
113
:But the theme that I'd like to
highlight today is that it's so
114
:important that we stop and heed God's
directions to discipline our kids.
115
:13:24 told us, "Whoever spares the
rod hates his son, but he who loves
116
:him is diligent to discipline him."
117
:Our study Entrusted with a Child's Heart
118
:can help you gain a
comprehensive understanding
119
:of what biblical discipline is
120
:And we have a great resource to help
guide you in that for free on our website.
121
:You might be wondering, where does
Entrusted stand on the issue of the rod?
122
:Betsy would say after decades of
researching this and studying it
123
:in scripture, disciplining your
child is a biblical conviction.
124
:How you do that is a personal conviction,
and you and your husband have a spectrum
125
:of options with which to choose.
126
:But it is certainly biblical that you
would choose to restrain your children
127
:from the sin in their own hearts
128
:As we read over and over about the
blessings of the fear of the Lord, I want
129
:to encourage and challenge you to make
sure that you're fearing the right things.
130
:Your awe and reverence of God
and your obedience to His Word
131
:should be the guiding force with
which you make your decisions.
132
:Not articles or books or expert
advice of people that you've never
133
:met that don't submit their lives to
Christ As Paul Tripp says, " There
134
:is no greater issue in the heart of
a child than the issue of authority."
135
:We bless our kids when we give them
boundaries and lovingly train them
136
:so that they submit and surrender
137
:My Moody commentary says of
this verse, " Parents who love
138
:their children discipline them.
139
:If folly is bound up in the heart of
a child, and that folly is deadly,
140
:then a parent who withholds the
rod not only spoils his son, but he
141
:may even push him toward his death.
142
:Loving one's child calls for
diligent discipline to root
143
:out the folly in his heart."
144
:At the end of grace-based discipline
145
:Karis Kimmel has an appendix
entitled To Spank or Not To Spank,
146
:and she says, "We have incorrectly
drawn the line in the sand.
147
:It shouldn't be to spank or not to
spank, because there are parents
148
:who spank who are walking in grace
and love, and then there are parents
149
:who spank abusively as punishment."
150
:I appreciate this analogy she gives.
151
:" But remember, a knife can be used
to make a death blow to the heart
152
:or for life-saving heart surgery.
153
:It matters whose hands it's in.
154
:Not all spanking is abuse,
and not all abuse is spanking.
155
:I know for a fact that in the context of
a grace-based home, within the boundaries
156
:of a loving heart connection between
parent and child, when a parent is making
157
:a sacrificial choice to cause their child
and themselves a little bit of pain now
158
:to protect them from a whole lot more pain
later, abuse via spanking is not possible
159
:Before we get to the heart of the child,
we need to make sure that our hearts
160
:and our motives are in the right place.
161
:So with that in mind Let's once
again go before the Lord asking Him
162
:to purify us in disciplining our
kids as He lovingly disciplines us
163
:Heavenly Father, we are truly grateful
for your Word and the way that your Spirit
164
:transforms us through it Thank you for
entrusting our children to us, and we
165
:want to parent them as you would have us.
166
:Help us to be faithful and
diligent, disciplining patiently
167
:and lovingly for their good
168
:allow us to see through the lenses
of eternity so we can get to
169
:the heart of the issues and not
compromise for their temporal comfort
170
:Grant us discernment
171
:So we're not manipulated or swayed.
172
:And give us endurance
173
:When it seems our words aren't
sinking in, and we're feeling
174
:discouraged by the lack of fruit
175
:Ultimately, guide us in your grace.
176
:We know we have been forgiven,
and we pray that you would
177
:help us to model to our kids
178
:the sweetness of your mercy and the
winsomeness of your ways, and point them
179
:to the joy that can only be found in you.
180
:May your words be the ones that rise
above all of the chaos and clutter that we
181
:encounter And clarify what you call us to.
182
:May we walk in the fear of you alone.
183
:In the mighty name of Jesus we pray, amen
