In this episode of The Dwelling Place Podcast, Stephanie Hickox walks through Proverbs 17–20, uncovering practical wisdom for Christian moms who desire to raise children in the fear of the Lord and build homes marked by grace, self-control, and biblical truth.

One theme rises above the rest: the power of our words. Solomon repeatedly reminds us that our speech can bring life or destruction, strengthen relationships or create conflict, and reveal the true condition of our hearts. As parents, wives, and disciples of Christ, our words matter deeply.

Stephanie shares memorable illustrations that can help children understand why Scripture calls us to be slow to speak and quick to listen. You'll also discover biblical encouragement for navigating sibling conflicts, cultivating strong family relationships, pursuing heart-level discipleship, and helping children develop wisdom that lasts a lifetime.

Most importantly, this episode points us to Jesus—the perfect source of wisdom—who always knew when to speak, when to remain silent, when to offer correction, and when to extend compassion.

Whether you're studying Proverbs, seeking biblical parenting encouragement, or longing to grow in self-control and wisdom, this episode will equip you to apply God's Word in everyday family life.

Welcome to The Dwelling Place from Entrusted Ministries.

2

:

I'm Stephanie Hickox.

3

:

Today, we dive into Proverbs 17 through 20

4

:

We'll read a lot about

the power of our words

5

:

And I can't help but think about how

perfectly Jesus, the source of all wisdom,

6

:

Knew when to speak, when to stay silent

7

:

One to issue truth

8

:

And when compassion and mercy were needed

9

:

Let's keep in mind that the

banner over this entire book of

10

:

the Bible is that the fear of the

Lord is the beginning of wisdom.

11

:

And isn't it amazing?

12

:

If you took a look at all of the opinions

available today, if we were to eliminate

13

:

anything that didn't begin with a respect

for our Creator and the source of wisdom,

14

:

it would really narrow down who we

could look to for guidance, wouldn't it?

15

:

Of course, we know that God in His grace

16

:

even offers wisdom to

those who haven't expressed

17

:

submission to Him as their Savior.

18

:

But I'm so proud of you that you

continue to go to the source of life,

19

:

the ultimate problem solver, your maker,

your guide, and your rock to lead you,

20

:

particularly in how you parent your

kids So let's keep hearing how the Lord

21

:

inspired the wisest man who ever lived

to instruct us in all manners of life

22

:

, I'll highlight about 10 verses

from each chapter that I think

23

:

can be pivotal for our training

and our instruction of our kids

24

:

And of course, we'll be seeking

conviction and holiness for

25

:

ourselves the whole time as well

26

:

In chapter 17 Verses one through two.

27

:

Better is a dry morsel with quiet than

a house full of feasting with strife.

28

:

A servant who deals wisely will

rule over a son who acts shamefully,

29

:

and will share the inheritance as

one of the brothers 17:5, whoever

30

:

mocks the poor insults his maker.

31

:

He who is glad at calamity will

not go unpunished 17:9 through 10.

32

:

Whoever covers an offense seeks

love, but he who repeats a

33

:

matter separates close friends.

34

:

A rebuke goes deeper into

a man of understanding than

35

:

a hundred blows into a fool

36

:

17:14, " The beginning of strife

is like letting out water, so quit

37

:

before the quarrel breaks out."

38

:

17:17, A friend loves at all time,

and a brother is born for adversity.

39

:

17:22, A joyful heart is good

medicine, but a crushed spirit dries

40

:

up the bones 17:25, " a foolish

son is a grief to his father and

41

:

bitterness to her who bore him."

42

:

And 17:27 through 28.

43

:

Whoever restrains his words has

knowledge, and he who has a cool

44

:

spirit is a man of understanding.

45

:

Even a fool who keeps

silent is considered wise.

46

:

When he closes his lips,

he is deemed intelligent

47

:

Turning to chapter 18, verses one and two.

48

:

" Whoever isolates himself seeks

his own desire; he breaks out

49

:

against all sound judgment.

50

:

A fool takes no pleasure in understanding,

but only in expressing his opinion."

51

:

18:6 through 7.

52

:

" A fool's lips walk into a fight,

and his mouth invites a beating.

53

:

A fool's mouth is his ruin, and

his lips are a snare to his soul."

54

:

18:12 through 13.

55

:

Before destruction, a man's heart is

haughty, but humility comes before honor.

56

:

If one gives an answer before he hears,

it is his folly and shame:

57

:

one who states his case first seems right

until the other comes and examines him."

58

:

18:20 through 22.

59

:

From the fruit of a man's

mouth, his stomach is satisfied.

60

:

He is satisfied with

the yield of his lips.

61

:

Death and life are in the power

of the tongue, and those who

62

:

love it will eat its fruits.

63

:

He who finds a wife finds a good

thing and obtains favor from the Lord

64

:

Chapter 19 verse one tells us,

" Better is a poor person who walks

65

:

in his integrity than one who is

crooked in speech and is a fool."

66

:

1911, good sense makes one slow to anger,

and it is his glory to overlook an offense

67

:

19:13 through 14.

68

:

" A foolish son is a ruin to his

father, and a wife's quarreling

69

:

is a continual dripping of rain.

70

:

House and wealth are inherited

from fathers, but a prudent

71

:

wife is from the Lord."

72

:

19:17 through 18.

73

:

Whoever is generous to the

poor lends to the Lord, and He

74

:

will repay him for his deed.

75

:

Discipline your son, for there is hope.

76

:

Do not set your heart

on putting him to death

77

:

19:23, " The fear of the Lord leads to

life, and whoever has it rests satisfied;

78

:

he will not be visited by harm."

79

:

And 17:26, " He who does violence to

his father and chases away his mother

80

:

is a son who brings shame and reproach."

81

:

Chapter 20 verse three.

82

:

It is an honor for a man to

keep aloof from strife, but

83

:

every fool will be quarreling

84

:

Chapter 20 verse 25.

85

:

The purpose in a man's heart is

like deep water, but a man of

86

:

understanding will draw it out

87

:

20 verses 10 through 11.

88

:

Unequal weights and unequal measures are

both alike an abomination to the Lord.

89

:

Even a child makes himself

known by his acts, by whether

90

:

his conduct is pure and upright

91

:

20 verses 17 and 18.

92

:

Bread gained by deceit is sweet

to a man, but afterward his

93

:

mouth will be full of gravel.

94

:

Plans are established by counsel;

by wise guidance wage war

95

:

17:20, "If one curses his father

or his mother, his lamp will be

96

:

put out in utter darkness 2022.

97

:

Do not say, "I will repay evil."

98

:

Wait for the Lord and He will deliver you

99

:

20:25.

100

:

It is a snare to say rashly, "It is holy,"

and to reflect only after making vows

101

:

Did you notice how frequently we

heard that our words can be a snare?

102

:

That they can either make

us look wise or foolish

103

:

I may have mentioned this before, But

one activity I did with one of my sons

104

:

that was struggling with more impulsive

emotions and speech was I bought

105

:

a tube of dollar store toothpaste,

and I gave him about 30 seconds to

106

:

see how much he could empty of it

107

:

As I predicted, he forcefully

squeezed out most of the tube

108

:

But then I told him he would

have 30 seconds to try to put the

109

:

toothpaste back into the tube.

110

:

He looked at me dumbfounded, but

then did his best to attempt it.

111

:

As you'd predict, he wasn't

able to get anything back into

112

:

the tube And I explained to him

that that's how our words work.

113

:

That once we say something, we

can ask for forgiveness, but we

114

:

can't completely take it back

115

:

And that's why the Bible

calls us to be slow to speak

116

:

Because as James tells us The

tongue is as powerful as the rudder

117

:

of a ship And as powerful as a

wildfire, we have to be careful

118

:

and prevent destruction before it happens

once our founder, Betsy Corning, was

119

:

having a conversation with her daughter

120

:

Who was striving to bring her tongue under

the control of the Holy Spirit as well.

121

:

She said, "Mom, I was gonna say

something, but I realized I would have

122

:

a lot of damage control to do if I did.

123

:

so I pictured a garbage can and all the

trash I'd have to pick up if I said what

124

:

I wanted, and I decided it wasn't really

worth it to pick up all that trash."

125

:

We can't see our words, but

they have a great impact.

126

:

And so I appreciate the analogies of

scripture and then these two practical

127

:

applications that can help our kids

Picture the impact of their mouths We

128

:

were also reminded to listen to both

sides of a situation, and any moms who

129

:

have mediated sibling difficulties know

that this is a really important step,

130

:

to be slow to judge what really happened

131

:

I wanna clarify one Proverbs that

might be confusing, and honestly, I

132

:

didn't understand it myself for a while

133

:

Proverbs 17:17 tells us, "A

friend loves at all times, and a

134

:

brother is born for adversity."

135

:

It almost seems like the friend

is more loving than the brother.

136

:

The brother is born for adversity?

137

:

What does this mean?

138

:

That brothers strengthen each other by

fighting with each other all the time?

139

:

It might seem like that, but it means

that a brother sticks by you even in the

140

:

hardest of times your family are the ones

that stand by you through thick and thin.

141

:

But hopefully these sibling friendships

that we're trying to help establish

142

:

are going to be lifelong relationships

143

:

that bless our kids forever.

144

:

Makes me think about Moses and Aaron

and James and John and Peter and Andrew

145

:

In Entrusted, Betsy talks

about that deep waters verse, a

146

:

Plan in the heart of a man is

like deep water, but a man of

147

:

understanding draws it out.

148

:

Betsy explains that as our kids get

older, it might take a little bit more

149

:

unraveling and pulling on the thread

to understand what's really the heart

150

:

of their attitudes and their actions.

151

:

But this is what we're called

to, to really get to the heart

152

:

of our kids Not just to think,

"Oh, they'll grow out of it,"

153

:

But to pursue them and not give

up, because that's how faithful

154

:

the Lord has been with us.

155

:

Mm-hmm.

156

:

So I don't know about you,

but in all this talk about

157

:

honoring the Lord with our words

158

:

I know I have to be a woman

of prayer, to guard my tongue.

159

:

So let's go before Him once again.

160

:

Heavenly Father, it is our privilege

to be called your children.

161

:

As we read that even a child is

known by his conduct, we wanna be

162

:

daughters that bring you glory.

163

:

We ask that the words of our mouths

and the meditations of our heart

164

:

will be pleasing in your sight That

we would be slow to speak and quick

165

:

to listen, and slow to anger and

quick to encourage and understand.

166

:

When we have nothing wise to add, fill

us with your spirit so we have the

167

:

self-control to stay silent Jesus,

you knew how to answer every question

168

:

You were able to end strife

before it started and to see

169

:

to the heart of every person.

170

:

We ask for wisdom about how to

interact with a culture so quick

171

:

to capitalize on every mistake and

cancel those it would disagree with

172

:

Teach us how to speak the truth

in love, not compromising But

173

:

seeing people as those made in your

image and worthy of our attention.

174

:

And we need your self-control

in our homes as well

175

:

prevent us from issuing impatient,

unkind words because we let our

176

:

guards down in the safety of our home.

177

:

Rather, I pray our families would

receive continual blessing from us.

178

:

May they be the ones we're most careful

to affirm and equip, and give us

179

:

Your eyes to speak identity and life

into those You've entrusted us with

180

:

Jesus, we're in awe of your

perfect example once again.

181

:

It's in the power of

your name that we pray.

182

:

Amen
