2
:I'm Stephanie Hagocks, and as we look
at Proverbs 21 through 24, we'll bring
3
:in some advice for marriage, talk about
a planning strategy good enough for a
4
:president, and cover one of the most
commonly quoted parenting verses But
5
:first, I wanna remind you of our giveaway.
6
:I'll link the directions in the show notes
7
:for our scripture reading today, once
again, I've selected some key verses to
8
:guide us from each of these chapters.
9
:I'll read those and then give you
my take on a few that I think are
10
:particularly helpful for us as moms.
11
:Beginning in chapter twenty-one
12
:The king's heart is a stream of
water in the hand of the Lord.
13
:He turns it wherever he will.
14
:21:5 and 6.
15
:The plans of the diligent lead
surely to abundance, but everyone
16
:who is hasty comes only to poverty.
17
:The getting of treasures by a lying tongue
is a fleeting vapor and a snare of death.
18
:It is better to live in a corner
of the housetop than in a house
19
:shared with a quarrelsome wife.
20
:21:13.
21
:Whoever closes his ear to the
cry of the poor will himself
22
:call out and not be answered
23
:21:17 Whoever loves
pleasure will be a poor man.
24
:He who loves wine and
oil will not be rich.
25
:21:19 It is better to live
in a desert land than with a
26
:quarrelsome and fretful woman
27
:21:23.
28
:Whoever keeps his mouth and his
tongue keeps himself out of trouble
29
:21:25 through 26, " The desire
of the sluggard kills him,
30
:for his hands refuse to labor.
31
:All day long he craves and craves, but the
righteous gives and does not hold back."
32
:and 21:30 through 31, " No wisdom,
no understanding, no counsel
33
:can avail against the Lord.
34
:The horse is made ready for
the day of battle, but the
35
:victory belongs to the Lord."
36
:And in chapter twenty-two, verse
one, " A good name is to be chosen
37
:rather than great riches, and favor
is better than silver or gold."
38
:Twenty-one two tells us, " The
rich and the poor meet together.
39
:The Lord is the maker of them all."
40
:twenty two four, The reward for humility
and fear of the Lord is riches and honor
41
:and life twenty two six, Train up a
child in the way he should go even when
42
:he is old he will not depart from it
43
:22:7 The rich rules over the poor, and
the borrower is the slave of the lender.
44
:Folly is bound up in the heart
of a child, but the rod of
45
:discipline drives it far from him
46
:twenty two, twenty four
through twenty five.
47
:Make no friendship with a man given
to anger, nor go with a wrathful
48
:man, lest you learn his ways and
entangle yourself in a snare.
49
:In chapter twenty-four, verses three
through six, By wisdom a house is built,
50
:and by understanding it is established.
51
:By knowledge the rooms are filled
with all precious and pleasant riches.
52
:A wise man is full of strength, and a
man of knowledge enhances his might.
53
:For by wise guidance you can
wage your war, and in abundance
54
:of counselors there is victory
55
:In 24:8, whoever plans to do
evil will be called a schemer.
56
:The devising of folly is sin, and the
scoffer is an abomination to mankind
57
:In 24:13-14, " My son, eat honey, for
it is good, and the drippings of the
58
:honeycomb are sweet to your taste.
59
:Know that wisdom is such to your soul;
if you find it, there will be a future,
60
:and your hope will not be cut off."
61
:24:21, My son, fear the Lord
and the king, and do not join
62
:with those who do otherwise
63
:In 24:27, " Prepare your work outside,
get everything ready for yourself in the
64
:field, and after that, build your house."
65
:and twenty four thirty
three through thirty four.
66
:A little sleep, a little slumber, a
little folding of the hands to rest, and
67
:poverty will come upon you like a robber,
and want like an armed man You probably
68
:heard some really familiar ones in
there, including Proverbs 22:6, " Train
69
:up a child in the way he should go.
70
:Even when he is old, he
will not depart from it."
71
:Many believers cling to this as a
promise, thinking, "Isn't it such good
72
:news that if we just do our part, God
promises that we have this guarantee?"
73
:But it's just taking this verse out of
context to take it as a promise when
74
:it was just intended to be a proverb of
what often happens in life when we're
75
:faithful In fact, I was given a book
on the wisdom of Proverbs, and they
76
:devote an entire section on this verse.
77
:It gets pretty complex going back
to the original language, but they
78
:said that many people see this verse
actually as a warning, kind of like
79
:you can't teach an old dog new tricks.
80
:You better teach them while they're
young because there's no way
81
:they'll learn it when they're old
82
:Remember Proverbs 19:18 told us,
" Discipline your son while there is hope.
83
:Do not set your heart on his destruction."
84
:When we have a deterrent
for our children's behavior
85
:we have an opportunity
to guide their hearts.
86
:Of course, this is an issue we wanna be
so careful with, and we spend several
87
:chapters talking about what godly,
loving discipline that gets to the
88
:heart of our kids looks like in the
Entrusted With a Child's Heart study
89
:Because we know that these are really
sensitive issues, and we wanna make
90
:sure that we are only disciplining
our kids as the Lord would have us
91
:but going back to that old dog, new
tricks idea, we've all experienced
92
:grown adults that have been allowed
to continue in patterns that were
93
:frustrating it may seem overwhelming
when we are constantly training our kids
94
:But this is the prime time for
training and it may not be a
95
:guarantee of what they'll become.
96
:But at the end of their lives,
would you rather say that you've
97
:been faithful with anything else?
98
:If you are experiencing the pain of
having a prodigal child, I'm gonna
99
:link to an episode on our Again podcast.
100
:One of my dear friends and her husband
are biblical counselors, and they
101
:did a wonderful job speaking hope and
direction into this really painful trial
102
:when we get to some of these verses about
wives, especially 21 verse 19, " It is
103
:better to live in a desert land than with
a quarrelsome and fretful woman," I get a
104
:picture of the mom in Pride and Prejudice
her character is so exasperating, but
105
:particularly when she says, " Oh, Mr.
106
:Bennet, how can you tease me so?
107
:Have you no compassion
for my poor nerves?"
108
:And he wittingly responds,
" You mistake me, my dear.
109
:I have the highest respect for them.
110
:They have been my constant
companions for these 20 years."
111
:I think we all feel
quite sorry for poor Mr.
112
:Bennet having had to live with her
113
:in 24:3, " By wisdom, a house is built,
and by understanding it is established."
114
:It brought to my mind Proverbs 14:1, "The
wisest of women builds her house, but
115
:folly with her own hands tears it down."
116
:It convicts me as a wife because I
can either be a part of strengthening
117
:my home or tearing it down
118
:A couple verses later, we read, "A
wise man is full of strength, and a
119
:man of knowledge enhances his might."
120
:I am ever the advocate of loving the Lord
with all of our minds, And I really love
121
:This idea that we are gaining strength
by increasing in knowledge:
122
:reminded us to put first things first.
123
:Prepare your work outside.
124
:Get everything ready for yourself in the
field, And after that, build your house.
125
:I've read that before and thought,
"Don't let my husband see that verse,"
126
:'cause if he thinks it means we better
mow the lawn before we do any house
127
:projects, we're gonna be in trouble.
128
:But we need to think about
who the original audience was.
129
:This was an agrarian society.
130
:If they didn't plant their seeds first,
they were all going to starve it
131
:means to do the first things first
or the most important things first.
132
:Perhaps you've heard this quote from
President Dwight Eisenhower, " What
133
:is important is seldom urgent, and
what is urgent is seldom important."
134
:Stephen Covey created a matrix on this,
And I think it can be really helpful
135
:because motherhood often feels like
the tyranny of the urgent There are
136
:constant interruptions from us managing
so many different spheres of life.
137
:I want to put this more into practice for
my family, and I thought you might too
138
:Let's picture a chart with four quadrants
139
:The first quadrant on the upper
left is where the important and the
140
:urgent intersect, like a crisis.
141
:For example, an urgent medical need.
142
:You have to deal with it right away
because your child's health is important,
143
:but it's also urgent because if you don't
act now, there will be a consequence.
144
:If we move right to quadrant two
There's the intersection of things
145
:that are important but not urgent.
146
:This is where our goals and
planning come into play.
147
:Precisely that planting of the
seeds that needs to happen.
148
:It may not need to be done this very
moment, but it can't be neglected either,
149
:or there will also be consequences.
150
:If we go down to quadrant
three on the bottom left
151
:This is things that are probably
classified as interruptions because
152
:they're not important, but they are
urgent, and it requires wisdom to know if
153
:we really have to heed or pay attention
to these interruptions in our days.
154
:It reminds me of getting an email
for a sale, and you have to decide,
155
:do I actually need these
things that are on sale?
156
:or is this just an interruption?
157
:And finally, in that fourth quadrant on
the bottom right, we have the intersection
158
:of not important and not urgent.
159
:Instead of just being interruptions, these
are the distractions, and there's just
160
:no need to pay attention to any of them.
161
:Depending on what your convictions
are, you might find that something like
162
:social media would fall in that quadrant.
163
:Perhaps you're realizing at the end
of scrolling, you've never felt good
164
:about how you've spent that time,
and it's never been life-giving
165
:or peace-producing for you.
166
:It might be something that you just
say, "I'm gonna have to reevaluate
167
:later, but I just don't have
time for these kind of things."
168
:The banner over all of this has
to be a perspective of eternity
169
:Maybe we have an opportunity to share the
gospel, and we know that it's absolutely
170
:urgent, and we drop everything for it.
171
:But the most important things
in life take intention, and
172
:they're not just going to happen
173
:And what could be more important or
more intentional than us praying?
174
:So let me close being guided by
Proverbs 23 as we lift up our kids.
175
:Heavenly Father, we
treasure how life-giving and
176
:peace-producing your word is
177
:Help us to train our children so that they
would apply their hearts to instruction
178
:and their ears to your words of knowledge.
179
:May we be faithful to discipline
them We pray for wise children that
180
:speak what is right so we could
rejoice in their godly character
181
:We pray that you would protect them
from envying sinners, but guide
182
:them in walking in the fear of you.
183
:That they would realize that this is
what gives them a hope and a future
184
:Direct them in a way that would glorify
you and do not allow them to be given
185
:over to addictive habits Give them
humility to listen to us as parents
186
:And pursue wisdom and knowledge,
realizing the blessing of a strong
187
:education May we have their hearts
and as they observe our ways, may they
188
:see mothers and fathers following you.
189
:So we could say, "Follow
us as we follow Christ."
190
:Thank you, Jesus, that with
you there is always hope.
191
:It's in your name we pray.
192
:Amen.
